No, most men join the other ranks of the armed forces because they haven't got better options that middle-classes and highly educated and high achiever school leavers might have.
It's a job, and a profession that beats getting stuck in a dead end job.
The army is a good place for a young man with no qualifications to earn money and acquire skills and benefits, have some adventure etc. It's physical and a challenge.

Loads of my friends I went to school with joined the army. They didn't have any strong sense of your Daily Mail reader ideological reasons. They were just simply squaddies.
Some have done well out of it, others not so well.

    I disagree.
You devalue the word "hero" by making every single soldier a hero.

Your whole outlook seems to be a political point.
In fact, battlefield heroes have nothing to do with the politics behind the conflict but what the soldier does on the battlefield.
It's about deeds on the battlefield.
That's why Victoria Crosses and DCMs were not given out willy-nilly.
And many time the enemies of our country had its war heroes too. Objectively they performed heroic acts on the battlefield too.

I understand your point when you say even guys who make up the numbers make a difference, but to say they qualify as "heroes" seems wrong to me.
The whole concept of a "hero" is to be a one-off or rarity among his peers.

Not every soldier is a good soldeir I agree.

But the soldiers who do their jobs to the best of their abilities, put their lives on the line are brave and heroic in my book whatever the reason they initially signed up.

If they simply wanted adventure they could go on holiday or join some rebel group but instead they choose to join a noble cause.

I value the milatary because they keep the scum at bay. Without them we'd be writing with stones on walls and forbidden to use textbooks to examine history, culture/art and the sciences.

If you were living out there in the countries that we have occupied - which you seem to think were heavens before we arrived - you'd be looking up to the skies and begging for the west come and intervene everyday.

    Excellent post.

I also find the idea that us (British) are always the ones in the right when it comes to militant conflict a tad nauseating as well.

The same British who helped arm the Syrian rebels that we have now decided we need to remove.

Bashar al-Assad was the worst human being in the world according to the BBC and the rebels desperately needed help. Not sure anyone feels the same way any more about the situation.

Did you just imagine I typed something else? You're a complete bell end. You show yourself up mate.

You've got nothing to say so you just rant and spout more rhetoric. Those countries wouldnt dare because they know they would be blown back to dark ages.

Did you serve in Iraq? Well my family have, Afghanistan too. They've watched mates get blown to pieces for what? So we can pull out and just give the territory they fought and shed blood for back to the Taliban. Excuse them for being a bit cynical about the whole charade.

It's quite easy to form opinions from your arm chair and what the sun newspaper tells you. The reality is somewhat different.

I don't even know why im bothering to reply considering you know nothing about what's really happening.

In all the name of your imaginary '' freedom '' :patsch

He's one of those National Front types. Believes Britain liberates the world and all that nonsense. Ignore him.

What a dumbo, You support the military so much you can't even spell it. You learn how to write with a stone on a wall? :happy

Even suggesting there is a chance we could be over run by an Army from any Islamic country shows you are complete tool with half a brain cell.

Iraq had the biggest army in the middle east and it was smashed to pieces in a couple of weeks when we invaded. Somehow they're going to up their game and invade us?

Are you serious? You can't be

Exactly, most of the problems we seem to want to 'fix' was things we've broken ourselves by trying to fix. I see nothing wrong with being patriotic at all, but at times it confuses people into assuming everything we're doing is actually the right course of action.

This is just another way of saying you got the Sh*t beat out of you and your corner was too stupid or proud to stop the fight before being beaten senseless.
Those two Collins brothers have taken one too many punches themselves and are going to get poor Frank seriously hurt if he ever steps up again.

Really good post - one deserving of a better cause than a back-and-forth with DoubleEdge, who will clearly fail to grasp any of it.

Do you EVER have anything positive to say OP? You are like a black hole of negativity, I feel sorry for the people close to you, if there are any.

    Back on topic...

Whilst I do think the 'brave and showed heart' rhetoric is overused, I think it was used quite rightly in Frank's case.

I value and respect the military and the police and the firemen etc

All good guys (well the vast majority are) doing a tough and dangerous job at times

Often needing to be heroic at times

But there isn't one I know personally (and I know a few in all of those jobs) who hasn't signed up because it's a job that suits them and decent pay with a decent pension

And most from the day they join set a target for when they can get out and start doing something else either in retirement or with the money or skills they earn

    That's a fact of life

I bet none of them want to be out in the Middle East tbh and are always delighted when they finish the stint
