A top jab, a top chin, and a height advantage = tough to beat at HWY

I think so. Being able to out point the opponent with little chance of losing via TKO or KO by punches is a tough out.

Tunney and Liston would rarely have height advantages against proper heavyweights.
Liston had some long arms though so it helped.

The way heavyweight boxing has went, the emphasis on carrying more weight has resulted in more difficulty across the division in shorter boxer's overcoming any kind of reach disadvantage in a way that happens regularly in any other weight class. With the slow pace, spurt fighting, and importance of explosive close range bursts in order to conserve energy, slipping a jab is often obsolete. Heavyweight boxing is all about the man with the longest arms winning. More and more it is not the best technical boxer it's often just the biggest guy with longer arms.

 

You could probably find fighters with these attributes, who were never better than mediocre.

 

A prime Tyson i.e with limited height, reach but with top notch reflexes will give all of these guys problems decent chin or not.

They should asolutely penalize & crack down on holding. Even if it was so often allowe before. Or let the smaller guys have a batter chancxe by allowing folks to hit when clinching. That seems absurd, but it would be better than allowing folks to spoil a legitimate boxing match through holding & pulling.

 

That's what Heavy Weight Boxing is missing. What Tyson did in the 80's was nothing short of remarkable. Put all these big guys like Ali, Klistchko brothers, Lewis, Tucker in 1985-88 and watch a midget with a small reach get inside these guys (barring Ali) at the speed of light.

 

If the smaller guy is good enough and has the right attributes, then he can beat the present day large robots.
There have been countless examples over the decades.

 

That's what we have now. Bigger guys bullying there way to success using an advantage. Be it size or reach or both. Or exploiting the rules with pulling and holding. Jack Johnson did it years ago so it's always went on.
