We signed in front of a lawyer and he notarized it.

Such is the politics of this business at times here is another tale of how a fighter has to often swim against the tide.

Friend of mine went to watch a show in the UK last night couldn't make it myself but it was a fight between two unbeaten prospects and a domestic eliminator. The fighters not even on the fight publicity, posters etc the guy I know lets say having contractual issues that do now seem resolved.Thankfully, but it seems the inside track being he needed to be somewhat 'messed around, taught a lesson'.

He even warned people buying tickets off him he may not even get on!So instead of shifting a decent number of tickets, many were returned to the promoter. The promoter was not happy and took umbrage to the fact that nothing had been done to help .He was told he would be the fight before the main event....he wasn't he was on after, many of course had left the arena. To get last trains home etc..farcical when other than the main event, this was alongside one other fight a real decent match on paper.

The fight went the distance,10 round contest the guy I know remained unbeaten with most observers believing it was way wider than the judges card suggested.....

A lot of money bet on the guy he beat on the day of the fight, like I was told would of been very interesting had those contract issues not been dealt with, last minute.

It's a civil contract, was it the managers lawyer? Most contracts have a clause that says that you have the right to have your own lawyer look at it before you sign, was that clause in your contract? Is there a clause that states what the manager is going to do for you. Sounds to me that it wouldn't be worth it to fight in court cos it will cost him and you money.
Has the guy done anything at all for you?

The problem with the lawyer is I'm pretty sure they are good friends. He has not done ANYTHING for me in almost a year I only sparred at his gym once and went the first time because there was suppose to be alot of people on Saturday and I was the only one who showed up. I have not hit pads with him once. Huge mistake I made HUGE.

The only clause is it states that if I turn down more than 2 fights I have to pay him 100$ per round scheduled. It is a 3 year and it automatically renews unless written request to end it.

Dempsey has outlined through the many wise words advise wise he has given on this thread, signing that pro contract you as a boxer in many ways become a business to yourself and if allowed a commodity to others.Do your homework.

Boxing it has served up hard luck stories for sure but go into it research done you can certainly and will change your life for the better. Not easy but with decent guidance be the master of your own destiny.

If you want out of the contract just make him an offer he can't refuse.

This is new to me, I believe this contract based on what you say is illegal if you can afford it take the contract to a lawyer. I would think if a lawyer saw it he could find holes in it. Just cos the guy has a lawyer doesn't mean the contract is legal. You have rights if you cant afford a lawyer see if there is a legal aid at your county court house. This contract sounds bogus and one sided to me. I never in almost 40yrs I've been doing this heard of a boxer paying a manager if he turns down fights. A manager has a duty to perform, for example, manager promises 4 fights a yr.

I was offered a promotional contract about 6-7 years ago that stated the 4 fights a year but no he does not have anything like that.

This contract sounds one sided favoring the manager, I believe your contract wont hold up in court because it spells out your duties and penalties but has nothing on what duties he has to perform to further your career.

UK cruiserweight Ovill McKenzie narrowly failed to claim the IBF title last night majority draw away from home against Victor Ramirez in his backyard in Buenos Aires,Argentina.

A fight he won clearly but no surprise a bit of home cooking saved Ramirez.McKenzie is not known as 'The Upsetter' for nothing a record of 25-12-1,he took the fight on 11 days notice.

When people talk about fighters records it doesn't always tell the fighters true story.McKenzie a fighter who proves records are for DJ's,great effort hats off to him.

In Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini's bio, 'The Good Son", it tells of his decision to turn pro and deciding on a manager. He had one offer from a local bookmaker/gambler, who offered Mancini $250 a week to train, plus a car, and an apartment. Dave Wolf, offered Ray, a plane ticket to NYC, and medical insurance, no money upfront, no salary, no car and no apartment. And until he got on his feet he could sleep on his trainers couch. Ray did his homework and asked the right questions. Ray, asked "who would get him fights, who would train him and who had the juice to make sure no one gave him the business". He chose right and became champion, he chose Dave Wolf.

My guy won this weekend on the Crawford card. I met Adam Pollack there at the fight. Adam has written a fantastic series of books, on various heavywt champs. John L Sullivan, James J Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons, Tommy Burns, James J Jeffries, Marvin Hart, and Jack Johnson. If you enjoy reading boxing books these are among the best. I love them cos of the history. If you love boxing as I do then check these out.
