Who would you favor over hagler at middleweight?

I agree with you that the speedsters would trouble him, Monzon would have been a 50/50 fight too IMO.

 

Good post. I think more highly of Nunn's chances (on his best night, when he has everything working) but it's obviously a tough matchup. Did you not think that the Antuofermo fight was a robbery? I think that strong, rough middleweights can make things a bit tough for Hagler, who doesn't always fight the most strategic fights, but at the end of the day I think that he clearly outboxes all of them by a healthy margin (without bad judging that it is). Roldan might be another case in point, although most people just dismiss it as Hagler getting old.

 

I'd say Monzon and Jones would have the best chance. Can't honestly comment on Greb and l think Hagler is a better middle than even the great SRR.

McCallum does not beat Hagler what does he do better?

 

Try teach them the way, otherwise it will keep happening. I appreciate its not always easier to reason, but replace bigger with a slight height advantage and it's done and dusted. Not that McCallum being 'bigger' does much for him, like somebody has already mentioned, Hagler trumps him for reach and His style is just as useful when more surface area is provided.

 

And to answer your question Mike's body punching is slightly better for me. He also didn't leave himself as open as Hagler, they're both very good technicians though. The most glaring difference for me is there competition, Hagler has fought and beat greater men, which is another reason why I'd take him in this particular match up

Read the thread and you will see exactly why some of us ( even big fans of Mike McCallum ) believe he would would rightly be a big underdog against Hagler.

I'll just say this again. If they had fought I would be rooting for Mike, but forced to put money on it, I'd back a Hagler win, because he had too much of everything for McCallum, prime for prime.

 

Hagler obviously has a deeper resume because he spent his whole career at the weight but McCallum easily has the better wins.

and that is just at 160 McCallum is also the greatest 154 of all time.

 

I don't see how beating say, Kalambay is better than beating Hearns?

McCallum was good, but I feel as though folk are going a little too much the other way on Mike now. Yes, for years he was something of an overlooked fighter and fans didn't really pick up on him, but over the last few years there had been a MCCallum resurgence which has gathered momentum to the point where he is becoming a little overrated, imo.

Kalambay led him a merry dance in their first fight, he laboured to a SD over Herol Graham (I'm not sure he actually deserved that win in what was a terrible fight) he lost to a still-not-the-complete-package-yet Toney and had too many close fights for me to think he could beat a peak Marvin Hagler.
Good fighter sure. A solid, consistent performer. But in my eyes he isn't beating Marvin. His biggest win was against Don Curry at 154 and he failed to capitalise on it.
