Just curious as to who performance you consider greater in their losing effort against all time greats. Billy Conn's performance in the first Louis fight, or Tim Witherspoon in his loss to Larry Holmes? Which rates higher historically?
I voted conn, and why not the guy was never a real HW yet outboxed at least Louis one time.On the otherhand Witherspoon was a big legit HW and the fight could've went either way,its common sense here...conn certainly takes it by embarrassing the great Louis at least on that night even in a loss.
... although to be fair to Conn, he had 15 rounds to last and was in with a bigger puncher than Holmes.
I always felt that Holmes beat Witherspoon fairly clearly - I never agreed with all the "controversy."
All Billy Conn lacked was a big punch...he had everything else in profusion....guts, superlative skill, guts, fast hands, guts, fast feet, guts, confidence, guts, ring generalship,...and did I mention guts? His only fault vs the great Brown Bomber was that "Irish problem" that he had,...that got him knocked out. I'd definitely say that his loss to Louis was more impressive.
Well, given that I scored the fight for Tim, and that Conn's loss was clear, I'd have to say Witherspoon.
