Could a ''prime'' Mike Tyson truly beat the Buster Douglas of February 11th 1990?

Maybe if Tyson had taken Douglas more seriously ... but he only has himself to blame.

 

Took a hell of a beating, knocked the guy down, got knocked down himself, picked his gumshield off the floor, put it back in his mouth to carry on fighting.

Ive got plenty of other examples of fighters with excuses and worse performances than Tyson, Vitali was the first one that came to mind.

David Haye is another one.

Actually I read somewhere that Tyson was "servicing" various women on the lead-up to the fight and including the night before the fight. He clearly had no respect whatsoever for Douglas and paid for it. Just goes to show just how important mindset and attitude is for a fighter.

 

I don't know if I'd call the Mike Tyson of 1990 " past prime " so much as I might refer to him as " damaged goods." his career and performances took a dive for obvious reasons. But could he really beat that version of Douglas had he been in top form? We'll never know. Most of Mike's previous opponents either fought to survive or lost so quickly that he had very few showings of over coming adversity. Tony Tucker was in " play it safe" mode for most of their meeting and from what various reports say, was even fighting with an injured hand. Pinklon Thomas gave a gallant effort but was rumored to be doing heroine again. Still some of these guys were able bodied men of reasonable size, age and experience and Tyson beat them all convincingly. I think that Tyson between the years of 1986 to 1989 would have been at least formidable for just about anyone.. But something tells me he'd still have to work for the Douglas win if he really wanted it. And its not because Douglas was a great fighter or that Tyson wasn't a great fighter. The chemistry there would simply always make for a tough match.

 

What about Tyson meekly surrendering to Danny Williams, sat on his butt obviously able to get up but refusing to.

 

Here we go again with the same old chestnuts..... It's been scientifically proven that s.ex before a contest as no ill affect at all. But if you want to believe banging a ladyboy for two pumps and a squirt is going to turn you into a walking punchbag then go ahead....

 

Yeah but that was past prime Tyson, they have an answer for everything...

 

To be fair, Tyson turned up on a few occasions for fights without much training and respect for his opponents and still ended up winning. Yes his poor conditioning and lack of adequate preperation cost him ultimately but that being said what Douglas did was truly remarkable.

Douglas had actually prepared for months for the fight. They studied Tyson, developed a game plan which was to use the jab and if he got inside use the upper cut, push him away, slug with him but not back away and Douglas trained really hard for 12 whole rounds. It's funny how fearless he was that night, literally not scared of dying.

Am surprised why Team Tyson never pushed aggressively for a rematch. Am pretty sure Tyson would have evened things out. Douglas would not have been able to replicate what he did.

 

Why don't you lace a pair sometime and show everyone how tough you are?

 

ah yeah, don't forget this version of Tyson, lack of preparation and all the madness of is life, nearly stopped Douglas the round or two before his own KO... if I remember right the bell intervened or a delayed count spared him. I'll have to view it again.

so a peak perfect Tyson Ko's him as sure as he did everyone else. same applies to LL.

But full marks to Douglas he 'boxed' beautiful and never wavered from jabbing and the follow up. an excellent performance & deserved win.
