Duran tested the inside waters and found he couldn't match Hagler. So being the smart fighter that he is he tried various means from the outside. Tho outboxed on the whole there he had more success and was under less pressure.

IMO Duran fought the best fight he could have with what he had and what he was up against.

Yeah, right to what you said, but I still think that Calzaghe was not at his best and was capable of beating Hopkins by a wider margin and avoiding being knocked down as well. It was an OFF NIGHT....like so many quality fighters have, even in important fights.

Yeah I agree. But he should tried to opened up more inside when Hagler got there instead of covering up defensively most of the time. And I did say previously that I would not expect him to be 'seeking' a physical fight, only when he was forced into it. I would not really say Duran tested the inside waters, certainly not offensively. Yes at times he punched inside, but rarely. He probably never wanted to get into his usual kind of fight at close quarters because he would have got a taste for it, thus fighting the totally opposite of how he planned and getting into a war. Duran fought a very programmed type of fight.

However, I do agree that he done as well as he could considering his disadvantages in power and strength.

Maybe the fact that this fight was scheduled for fifteen also made duran a little conservative in his approach...

I agree with this, except that I had Hagler losing by 2 or so to Leonard. Not an underrated win by any stretch.

Funny I have mad respect for Hagler, he's the guy, and there's always usually one, who hooked me on boxing. Duran what can you say, he was a living legend. I think Hagler, for whatever reason didn't really fight his fight, which interesting enough, it's a hell of a lot different for Duran's. He's almost a bigger version of him. Did he give him to much respect, maybe, or maybe he just figured that Duran would eventually get tired and slow down during the championship rounds, which is exactly what happened.

As far as Duran thumbing Moore, to me at least, that was started by Bernstein and I'm not saying it didn't happen but neither can I say for sure that it did happen. It seems to me that he speculated that it happened and it just because accepted wisdom that it did. Does anyone know for sure whether or not Duran thumbed Moore?

I think Moore claimed this and that if I were Hagler, regardless of the truth of the matter, I would not want to take any chances.

    It was a good win.
I don't think it's underrated as a win, but perhaps Hagler's performance gets some undue criticism.
I'm in the camp that thinks Hagler deserved about 10 rounds. I thought those scorecards were well off.
Duran showed a lot of cleverness but didn't do enough to win more than 5 rounds.

Monzon still would have gotten Duran out of there. There is no way that Marvin should've let Roberto last that long.
