How many heavyweight champions would Povetkin beat?

I wouldn't like him against most "tier one" heavies, but he'd fit in well with the level under that. If we're going by the mettle shown in the lineal reign, the modern (post-Marciano) heavies I like his chances agains the most would be:

Patterson, Ingo, Spinks Bros, Buster, Moorer, Rahman, Holmes (end of reign), Ali (post Frazier III), old Foreman

Toss ups: Frazier, Bowe (depends on if the Holyfield III or Golota version shows up, so I balanced it out to a toss-up), Liston

Underdog against: Ali (pre-Frazier III), Holyfield, Tyson, Lennox, Klitschko Bros, Holmes (early reign), young Foreman

 

Would? No idea but obviously not Wlad.

so in other words if a non popular name is not on his resume it gets cancelled out as an average win or a non past time great or American fighter in general who is ranked? :roll:

Who did Jeffries beat? Do you really think that Tom Sharkey beats Chambers?Corbett? Do Tommy Burns or the one trick pony McVey beat Chambers? How about Fred Fulton or Firpo? It gets tricky when you start going down this path.

I think Povetkin, at his best, would be competitive with almost any champ. I certainly don't pick him to win against any champ but he would be in the fight. He's very complete.

 

This is a good thread. Povetkin is a lunch pail type of guy. You watch him at first and your like he's ok but can be outboxed. Yet no one has outboxed him.
He reminds me of Marciano a little, slow of foot, but an extreme desire and will to win. Great finishers. Povektin is also a very very accurate puncher. If you have any quit in you he will bring it out. He's not great but he's very very good. Better than he appears at first look.

That is definitely his most stand out feature for me he's excellent on the inside and especially so for a HW. That and his accuracy which was mentioned already he really is a pinpoint puncher.

Takam is no joke, I'd pick him to outwork and wear out most heavyweights and yet Sasha did it to him. To me that was a more impressive win than Perez tbh. Loved the triple uppercut :yep

 

No, but people need to be a lot more cautious in what they claim for Povetkin.

Some people are building him up into something that he wasn’t.

Mushnu beat Eddie Chambers better and easier than Povetkin did. Chambers was over weight , slow and sluggish in that match. He got into top fighting shape for Mushnu and lost worse than he did against Povetkin.

Whats Povetkin doing now? He spent less than a min in the ring against a Sky prize fighter candidate and he has to wait a whole 6 months before stepping in the ring against a tune up. This guy can't fight more than two times a year against Bums. Who is to know how he'd handle constant camps and fights like the old timers did.

He had to riddle himself with juice to beat 3 bottom rankers on his come back trail.

The best out of those 3 was shutting him out before he blew his gas tank.

Look how how Tackam kept Povetkin on the outside with a jab and movement. He didn't need to use a single clinch or illegal tactic to cleanly out box him . Go look at Wlad and see how he hand't the boxing skills to control Povetkin like Tackam did. Whose the weakest link here? Povetkin - Wlad - Tackam.

Povetkin was an Ibeauchi prototype. A lesser one. Prime Byrd was destroyed by Ike in 5 rounds. Shot beyond belief Byrd who had no legs whatsoever quit in his stool close to the final bell. Povetkin took the acid test and clearly doesn't compare to a 90's fringe contender.
If Povetkin is so good , then Ike must be one of the ATGs.
