Golota was better. And he had size and reach to go with it.

    Povetkin:

    1) Is not on any juice.
    2) Povetkin beat Eddie for his 1st loss when AP only had 15 fights!
    3) His last 3 opponents have all been top 15 in THE WORLD.
    4) Ike didn't have the skills Povetkin has. It's a tremendous accomplishment to be an Olympic Gold Medalist and Povetkin is as skilled as any of them. 125-7 record proves this.

Povetkin exists in the worst HW Division known to man and he still couldn't become champ.

Golota has a simolar skill set with added size and better defensive tricks , therefore he was better than Povetkin. He fell short because he campaigned during a great era. That means Ppvetkin would have lesser success than him in that era.

    1. Can you prove it?
    2. Chambers was a Top 10 HW (by The Ring). Beating a Top 10 HW w/ 15 fights has not been done that many times in history.
    3. 2 (at least) of them were in The Ring's Top Ten.
4a. His defense was terrible. You can't last that long in boxing if you have bad defense. I don't care who you are.
4b. Amateur boxing hones your skills dramatically. Think about it, a physical game like football needs players to play in college to develop to go to the pros. Similar situation in boxing.

I have been very impressed with Alex since the Vlad fight, he has shown 2-fisted power, a solid chin and late stamina and early-mid-fight and late power and prior to the Vlad fight his stamina was wanting. I think he would give any heavyweight of the past a good fight and a danger including the ATG's and may be the best possible foe to take Vlads title

He can look polished at times. Against Wladimir he looked clueless. This gulf between 1 and the rest makes it hard to judge.

The main problem with Alex, and this goes for a bunch of contenders, is the lack of lateral movement. Many others share this combo of a barrel-shaped body & plodding feet. His forehead is right there for a good jabber to keep him at bay. Marciano and Frazier (men considered hittable) were veritable slicksters compared to him.

His good points - strength, endurance and sharp combinations would see him beat a good number of past champs though it's a bit unfair making the likes of Sullivan yield to his rule set. All things equal, John L. probably stiffs him. There's no evidence to suggest he could beat Marciano. Sharkey, Baer and Schmeling (at their best) are no less than 50/50.

People need to ease up on touting that he was the Olympic Gold medalist. He got a walkover in the final. He didn't even box. His opponent was too injured to compete.

Sort of like he was the heavyweight champion ... but not really. He was the WBA "regular" champion ... while Wlad was the WBA "super" champion.

Povetkin is a very good fighter. But his two biggest accomplishments - gold medal winner and heavyweight champion - have HUGE asterisks next to them given the fact he never actually WON either in the ring (since he didnt' fight the gold medal match and when he faced the "actual" WBA heavyweight champ he got destroyed).

Truthfully, I'd put him in the Jack Sharkey realm. Povetkin is better than most. But he was never the very best heavyweight in the world when he was boxing at any point. He wasn't "before" he was the WBA "regular" champ, or when he held that trinket and he certainly isn't right now.

So I don't know how he'd beat a lot of the men who actually "were" the best in the world when they fought.

Alexander Povetkin is a solid world class fighter who has led a well disciplined and successful career. He's been top five ranked for the better part of five years or more, had an outstanding amateur career and is a master of the basic fundamentals and more... I can see him beating a few of the weaker lineal champions and certainly being a ranked contender in any era.. But I don't know if I buy into this notion that he'd beat HALF of history's lineal heavyweight champions.. Let's face it.. In his one attempt to beat a ring ranked champion, he got beaten down in one side fashion against a 37 year old klitschko who dropped him four times In a match that might otherwise have been stopped had a different referee been presiding. His best wins have been against diminished renditions of Chris Byrd, Larry Donald, hasim Rahman, Cedric Boswell and ruslan chagaev.. The Eddie chambers fight was a good win but against a non aggressive opponent with no power and very little experience even for a man of 30 fights.. In addition it's taken Alexander 10 years to
Compile thirty bouts... R. Bowe had more than that plus the lineal title and a win over an ATG in just four... Sure Povetkin would be favored to beat Leon Spinks, Marvin hart, Ingo Johannson and the dire version of buster douglas who fought Holyfield, but honestly how many guys wouldn't?

Another poster and myself watched that fight live while texting our opinions back and forth and we both agreed the ref and povetkin's corner should consider stopping that fight at one point.. Regardless of what you think of the knockdowns or klits dirty tactics, povetkin got his ASS kicked...

    Speed is a different argument.

Povetkin has the same rhythm over and over. No variety . Jab hook. Lead hook followed by hook , hook. Little to no body attack. His pattern is predictable

Golota was much more creative . Double jabs, triple jabs. Multiple varied punch combos to head and body. His attack wads rangier and less predictable.

Somehow Povetkin is this master pin point hitter now. And he was against the human heavy bag Charr , but he missed a stupid amount of shots against Tackam.
