“What can I say? You win some, you lose some, and tonight I lost,” Matthysse stated. “I’m fine now. I went blind for awhile. I went blind. I couldn’t see anything. It was just the eye. I wasn’t hurt. I just went blind. I went blind and obviously it was cause for concern and I don’t want to go blind…the headbutt did affect me. It was bad. It really hurt. He hit me right in the eye. It just wasn’t my night. I couldn’t get off. He frustrated me. He really, really frustrated me. It was tough to get inside on him. I was able to do it in a few rounds, but it was just a bad night. It didn’t go my way…I have to give him credit, they had a good game plan. He used it and kept me away and then each time I got on the inside and started working he grabbed me and he held me so it was just very, very frustrating. “I felt comfortable with the pace of the fight. I also feel that I had dominated a few rounds and we were even in the cards. But, he got me with that right cross and hit my left eye. I felt there was damage to my eye and I also didn’t feel my body. The pain was instant and I knew I had to stop because I wasn’t sure what my eye looked like. But fortunately, nothing happened. My team tells me that it looks good. But, Postol is not the best yet.”
I believe him. Thinking you might lose an eye will make you quit in a hurray, and if you are blind, you'd be stupid to continue. His mistake was not pointing out the severity of that head butt and stopping the fight to go to the cards.
detached retina's are no joke. Matthysse's eyes have been the been a big flaw in his career lol. I think his time is up anyway...time to retire soon. He isn't Pacquiao or Mayweather...and all these fighters going into their mid 30's won't be round for long.
Well, if you're going to use that argument, then no one should box. Because every shot to the head could give you brain damage or even kill you. Right?
**** if a felt my eye pop or it did not feel normal I would ****ing quit why would I risk going blind?
You accept that risk though... if you're fighting then suddenly you can't see out of 1 eye it makes you reconsider things. Lucas has probably never even contemplated the risk of going blind from boxing...or losing eyesight intill last night.
LOL. That's taking it to the extreme. Obviously most shots don't cause you to lose sight in both of your eyes. If you find yourself blind, how can you fight. Blind, even a 30-20 fighter with 2 KOs can kill you.
Then you should be able to accept the risk of going blind. If you can accept the risk of dying and getting brain damage, then why not going blind? :think Playing Devil's Advocate here.
You're right, most shots don't, but one could and it's happened historically. There is always that risk. And plus, I don't even think there was anything wrong with his eye. He didn't say ANYTHING about it until he decided to stay on his knees. It was the fact that he was getting beat up and embarrassed from r7 onwards. That's the logical explanation.
Interesting comments from Mathysse. I can understand stopping if a punch turned off the vision in one of your eyes. Of course that did not stop our more heroic denizens from calling him a quitter and a coward. If it happened to any of them they would have gouged the eye out with a fork then threw it at Postol and immediately KO'd him when the fight resumed.
Like I said, his mistake was not taking ample time following the head butt. Probably because he'd been headbutted before and he thought that it would clear up, and it didn't. I'm not a Matthysse fan, but I do consider myself fair and objective. Although I'm not a fan, I don't have the impression that Matthysse is a quitter unless something was drastically wrong.
There WAS something wrong, he was spent and getting beat up. That's why. I'm NOT ripping on him for quitting, just that he's making excuses and lying. He keeps using that eye excuse, and it's very transparent as to what his motives are. It's flat out excuse making. If it's really his eye that caused him to forfeit, then why didn't quit in the DSG fight? His eye in that fight was so messed up, much worse.
You sure are good at putting yourself in a boxers hypothetical shoes, I wonder how you'd do in a boxers real shoes.
Admittedly, I wouldn't last a round against Postol. I don't mind admitting that. But I'd never lie about the reason as to why I lost. I don't rip on boxers for quitting, I just don't like the fact that they're making excuses and lying to the public about the reasons as to why they quit. That's my stance on this.
