I don't know.. maybe I'm getting a little brutal here. I do respect Lucas' concern to have his vision. And I even believe he indeed had problems with seeing properly after Postol nailed him right into his eye. But. Isn't this what a champion supposed to do - to get up under any circumstance other then if you are knocked out cold and have no physical capacity to get up? This is not the boxer himself (unless you are a journeyman of course) to take care of your health: there is a referee who should inspect you before letting you fight. You have your corner with a doctor there who would look into your eyes. They are responsible for such things, not the fighter. Am I being cruel? Perhaps... but we should never expect a real champion to have any slightest hint of self-compassion.. this is not what champions are about. So, while I understand Matthyse and wish him good luck, I don't recognize him to be in champion's league. Above all, that was not the final shot that took him out - he already got dominated mentally, and that's what you should never allow your opponent to do, especially when you are fight for the title.
Margarito kept going vs pac and had a fit when they stopped it vs cotto. and his eye was FAR worse I bet.
Some guys have a higher threshold of pain. That goes to show that all fighters aren't the same. What about Chavez against Randall. You see guys eyes pouring blood, and then you see Chavez the great let it go to the scorecards. You can give many examples and so can other posters.
Matthysse wasn't winning rounds. He was losing, getting out jabbed, hit hard to the body and his style is not the type of style that can come back against a big tall strong guy. He was getting close to landing his left hook or anything serious. He got hit with a hard shot, stayed on a knee and lived to fight another day. What you think a fighter should do is imaginary, and not reality. There are fighters out there with a higher threshold of pain. Fact Who are you to say who is a quitter and who isn't armchair. **** you!
Ultimately it is subjective, but what I expect from fighters, even champions, is different to what you expect. I expect fighters to fight through the physical and mental barriers - fatigue, pain, their mind telling them to quit - but, I do not expect fighters to kill each other or to carry on through any noticeable health issues that could be majorly detrimental to them in the future. Yes, I do expect a champion to fight through a broken jaw or hand, but losing your vision is completely different. It is not just long term, it is also the short term risk - Lucas being unable to see shots coming if he had continued in the Postol fight, plus the risk of him damaging his eye more and having to retire. If a fighter is getting beat and quits so as he can live to fight another day, I will have a problem with that (not as much as some people on here), but, a fighter quitting to live to fight another day because of a noticeable and dangerous detriment to their health, I have no problem with at all. It is easy to say you expect a champion to carry on, but really, how many would if they lost their vision in one of their eyes mid fight? It is all very well and good to say, "so-and-so would have fought on", but the reality is that most boxers don't experience what Lucas did so we have no idea what they would have done.
That's not even the point. I fully accept him wanting to quit (If his eye really was the issue). But it's clear that it wasn't. If it really was the issue, then why didn't he quit in the Garcia fight when his eye was noticeably much worse? It resembled a ****** ffs. It's clear that it WASN'T the eye that caused him to forfeit, it was just a convenient excuse. It was the fact that he was so frustrated by Postol's gameplan and was getting beat up starting from r7. He knew he was a beat man, mentally and physically. Once again, I have no problem with him wanting to quit, but don't lie to the public. That's low. I've always viewed him as a cheater and a prima donna and what transpired last night solidified my claims, 100%. Not because he quit, but because he's willing to stoop so low as to make excuses and lie to the public.
There is a difference between swelling and a possible broken orbital/nose. His post fight interview was ****ty though.
It wasn't just swelling, his eye socket was literally punched out in the Garcia fight. I dare say had Garcia been more ruthless in that fight and kept targeting that eye, Matthysse would probably be half blind today.
