Yeah, also, I can't easily think of a fight where Ali appeared to be the weaker man.
    Holmes doesn't count.
    Bonavena ? I can't remember.
    Chuvalo ? probably fits.

Yeah, George Chuvalo deserves a mention anyway. Legendarily strong.

Ali was trying not to get banged up on the ropes the majority of the fight,he maybe outmaneuvered a tired Foreman, theres a difference. If he was able to out muscle foreman the rope a dope would be unnecessary..The whole foreman was a giant compared to Ali however is greatly exaggerated there was only about a 4 pound difference.

Ali was a naturally huge guy. Always strong in clinches.

Ali definitely was a big strong guy, as was Holyfield he could muscle his opponents around and could bully most of them. He was even able to push Rid**** Bowe around the ring who was 30 pounds heavier than him!

    That's as complete a mis-understanding of the rope-a-dope as i've ever read.

Ali had only one way to fight that wait till foreman tired out.No one who watched this fight ever said Ali overpowered and looked stronger than Foreman ,you are the first ive seen in over 3 decades to say that. The rope a dope was not the plan,he had to adjust in the fight because the Foreman was so strong.

That's great. I love being the first person you've ever seen say that. I take that as an enormous compliment.

This thread is about physical strength. If Foreman was less strong but just as powerful and adept, it wouldn't affect that strategy.

And Ali won nearly every round of that fight. So he was hardly "waiting for George to get tired" he was punching him extremely hard in the face throughout the fight.

I don't know ,Ali really didn't get hit much on the ropes ,most were blocked body shots anyway,he counter punched off them,so he probably did win most rounds, though in an Ali fight you really have to WIN,because Ali seems to win anyway usually even if its a close round. Had Ali stayed in the middle of the ring and not used the ropes he would not have won this fight,he had no choice to go into the ropes because foreman put him there,it wasn't his choice. He saw Foreman would tire doing this and continued to do it,mainly he knew he was safe there and absorbed all the head shots by leaning backwards bouncning off themThis wasn't hard to do with Foreman telegraphs. In the end Ali on the ropes and winning every round doesnt say he was stronger than Foreman,no one will agree to that, its clear Ali waited his opportunity at a slowed down /gassed foreman then ended it.

    a) i haven't said that Ali won every round because he was stronger

    b) i have said that Foreman doesn't appear stronger than Ali on film, not that Ali was stronger

    c) Unforgiven already agreed with it (and so have others on this forum down the years)

Ali only layer on the ropes for portions of the fight, he was fighting off the ropes and out boxing Foreman the majority of the fight.
