Do you agree Lucas did the right thing?

most of you armchair warriors who call Lucas a coward for trying to prevent himself from going permanently blind or with brain damage (a la McLellan), would most likely quit from a bloody nose if you were in a fight

 

Didn't seem that badly hurt could have beat the count easily. I think he should have gotten up and atleast waited to see what the doctor said in the corner.

 

But But i thought lucas was a machine..

 

Any boxer that feels they cannot, or should not, go on for whatever reason should be able to quit, so yes.

And quitting comes at a price.

But if the price is higher for continuing- and you have realized that- then there's no question about what you should do. Likewise, if the corner sees that the fighter cannot gain anything by continuing, then they need to stop it.

I do feel that Matthysse could have handled his interview and excuses better, but then losing's not easy and quitting is often harder.

Some may have done it differently and who knows they may have been rewarded for that but there was also a very real chance of him losing sight in one of his eyes and his career being ruined.

 

If one believes that Matthysse genuinely felt there was an issue with his eye, it should be viewed as the right decision. I do happen to think that Matthysse noticed an actual problem with his eye.

I also think, at the point he took a knee, Matthysse sensed that the W had gone beyond his reach. Combine the two circumstances and you have a more complete reason to make the decision he did.

of course. only himself knows his body and not anyone else including the ring physician. that was a personal decision. his heart cannot be questioned since he is a brawler and had been seen with a lot of battles with good opponents. he is not boxer-runner who just quit when they are already tired and hurt and not allowed to hug.
