There seems to be a lot of Cooney fans here. How about Cooney vs Braddock? I think Braddock had the tools to beat him: very solid chin, good skills, good punch with both hands, stamina, and he was really tough. Cooney, in my opinion, was not fully developed as a boxer. Perhaps too much success with flattening opponents with his formidable left hook hindered his growth as a fighter. Also, Cooney's chin was not the best, nor were his training habits and his lifestyle away from the ring and gym was not the best. I see Braddock outclassing Cooney en route to a KO. What do you think?
Interestingly enough, both of these men had a relatively short lived peak. Cooney never developed beyond his 25th fight while Braddock wore the label of journeyman for a good portion of his career until he got a second wind and put a good streak together towards the title. So all in all, this is a good thread suggestion. Braddock beat good fighters is Art Lasky, Max Baer, John H. Lewis, and gave Louis a good run for his money for a bit. Cooney easily destroyed some past prime fighters who were at least still active on the scene and a few fringe and gatekeeper types while giving a prime Holmes a good fight. Hard one to pick. Braddock was rarely stopped and had sound boxing skill. Cooney's chin and stamina wasn't the greatest, but was James really the man to test him there? I can't see Cooney blasting out Braddock early the way that he did to old lyle and norton, but at the same time, I can't envision Jim schooling Cooney the way that Holmes did. Be a tough fight. I guess whoever brings their "A" game wins. Ring size and referee may have some effect on this one as well as weather or not we have a three knockdown rule or fighters being saved by the bell.
I like Cooney. Mobility and fast hands gave Gerry issues (Holmes, spinks). Stationary boxer/punchers did not. (Lyle, Norton,Young). Not betting the farm on Gerry but I do pick him with a measure of confidence between the two Irish Americans.
Gerry Cooney had the tools and the potential, but he never really fully developed. After his very game and solid effort in losing to Holmes he needed to get back in the ring. He will remain as one of those 'what might have been' question marks. I believe the Braddock who took the title from Baer and gave Louis a game fight would have enough savvy and determination to avoid Cooney's deadly left hook and go on to a comfortable points win.
C00ney would run over Braddock like a truck...this guy was Holmes toughest fight in the 80's over the easy Spinks who he wasn't remotely hurt from and won both those fights easily but was robbed. Against ****ey there was legit back and forth hitting. braddock accumulated over 20 losses in his career, unless someone can explain how 190 braddock out lasts a 6'6 giant with a punch wins, this match is laughable to me. spinks himself was much better than Braddock so not sure where Braddock is the favorite here,by what criteria?
Braddock had much more experience, was a more complete fighter than the one armed-****ey, could take a better punch than the fragile-chinned Long Islander, and was tougher mentally than the insecure ****ey. Jimmy's losses were mostly due to injuries.
What it comes down to, is that either Braddock would find a way to win, or C00ney would find a way to loose. It would be a rash man who bet heavily on C00ney.
So who hit him harder that didn't beat him of the 25 who did? sorry but Braddock is on a worst hw champ list for a reason in almost any google pop up ..
