Well fair play to you for pushing yourself through the pain barrier, and finishing the race, even if you were unaware of it.:good
What is it with you, and spouting about old time fighters as if they were some kind of diety? Boxing fans will ALWAYS criticise boxers. It is the nature of the beast. From Dempsey through to Mayweather, it matters not a jot. I believe that Duran was the ultimate fighter, even so far as to rate him as high or even higher than Ray Robinson, but the reality is other folks will not rate him anywhere near as high. However I wouldn't accuse them of being disrespectful to him, if they didn't.
what is it with you Foxy? that was a solid post by Burt, he wasn't "spouting" about Dempsey being a diety, he was saying he gets judged to harshly when compared to other fighters. Are you not capable of reading dude?
I AM perfectly sane and rational when it comes to boxing sir... It is folks like you who attack me BECAUSE of my age, accusing ME of nostalgic BIAS for defending just ONE MAN on this forum who is constantly smeared on ESB as a racist, a coward, an inept overrated boxer who if not for a few of us on this forum would be vilified ad nauseam forever. And I am fed up for innuendos attacking my veracity because of my age constantly. Why not either put up an asterisk on my posts or have the moderators on this site terminate me because I am still fortunate to be around ? If I am not wanted, sayonara ???
Thanks L for your kind response. I have seen and loved boxing since I was a pup lo these many decades. I try to be fair and objective about fighters of different era's but to be branded as a "nostalgic " old codger by some posters who have seen zilch compared to me is hard to swallow, and maybe I have out stayed my welcome. Gratia L...
you haven't outstayed your welcome burt,,, I read your posts and always enjoy them. Plus you probably taught me and or opened my eyes to a good many reality's about the older guys I never considered before. I am pretty darn sure there are many more than me that enjoy your posts. That Foxy fella gets off on belittling others more than anyone on this forum. He doesn't speak for the majority, he speaks for himself.
Burt I have learned that ESB is like spandex, anyone who can squeeze in is permitted. Please ignore criticisms rooted in the fact that your observations and amazing collection of experiences contradict their dogma. Your posts have always been informative and illuminating. Please keep up the good work.
If I considered you to be human I might take you seriously, as that is not the case I don't, but if anyone needs to learn to read it is you duck egg. Just look above again at Burts usual OTT rant on Dempsey's behalf accusing people who don't go all gooey eyed over his resume as " labelling him a racist, and a coward " They don't. Plenty of people pick over EVERY fighters resume's from Johnson, through Dempsey Greb, Robinson, Hagler, Uncle Tom Cobley as well, up to the present day, without giving them any kind of label. Burt's problem has NOTHING to do with his age, but EVERYTHING to do with the FALSE accusations he makes against people who don't worship the fighters he admires from yesteryear. If you are that fukking bothered you count how many posters are labelling Dempsey as a racist or a coward, as I can't be bothered. But let me know if you find even a handful. Now eff off and quack somewhere else your opinions are not wanted.
Yes. Dempsey's manager told Langford they were not looking for someone that good. Clearly an avoidance. Langford wasn't done putting notches in his belt. The fight could have been interesting in the early 1920's.Who did Langford beat in the 1920's? Langford owns wins over McVey, Godfrey, Flowers, and Clark. As far as a mis-match, Wills could not stop Langford in fights past 1917. Sam would have a puncher's chance.
You are confusing the offer of a match with Langford by Dempsey's then manager John The Barber Reisler and a much later quote which is very likely apocryphal since it is origin is Bert Sugar,in which Langford,[according to Sugar ,]asked Jack Kearns for a title shot against Dempsey post 1920. Wills not stopping Langford reflects on him not on Langford's chances with Dempsey.Wills could not hit like Dempsey. McVey was 36 and washed up ,he had won 2 of his last 7, those over men with records,0-3-0 and 2-0-0. Clark was as washed up as McVey. Godfrey was a 7 fight novice. Flowers was a middleweight. A punchers chance? Which heavyweight, or light heavy of any consequence did Langford ko after 1919 ? In 1920 Langford was 37 years old and half blind,to put him in with champion Dempsey would have been criminal.
if you didn't want my opinions you would put me on "IGNORE" but you don't so don't try to pretend I am forcing you to read and reply to my posts :yep :hey makes sense don't it foxy??? I have read posters on esb claim Dempsey was a racist and coward. Many a time. You claim "they don't", your wrong, I read one such post in the last week alone :deal Foxy, not only are you a very confused fella, you make wildly negative accusations about others using your confusion :rasta
Both Wills and Sam McVey could hit. Langford from 1920-1922 was a hard man to stop. And Langford who could hit stopped him early So, he was also good. Dempsey was maybe 17 pounds heavier that FLowers. Yes. Langford had a puncher's chance. Better than Flynn who KO'd JD in one round.
