Did '86 Iron Mike generate the same level of buzz Deontay Wilder is right now?

Tyson was known in countries where no one was interested in boxing. Wilder isn't even known in most places in America.

Ha! Hilarious...! The only buzz around Dee-On-Tay is the flies FFS! Comparing him to Iron Mike, arguably the best heavyweight since Ali on any level is doing Tyson a serious injustice. People hyping Windy Miller to the same level as Tyson are just deluded.

I was 4. I lived in rural Ireland with 2 tv stations. My brothers and father talked about Mike Tyson! They won't know who Wilder is if I ask.

This is why I asked '86 Tyson who just beat Berbick. Not Mike Tyson who KO 1 Michael Spinks. How big was the hype level around Mike when he was the freshly crowned WBC belt holder -- compared to Wilder's media exposure right now?

I was not around back then, but looking at some early Tyson fights he was regarded as a prodigy before he even started knocking out ranked men. But he also had a legendary trainer behind him so I guess it made things easier for him.

    Of course not.

Everyone today is speaking about Deontay Wilder... at work, at school, in the streets, my old mum, everybody.
When he lays another top class fighter to waste inside a couple of rounds, all newspapers frontpages are littered with it. If you haven't seen the fight you're the odd one out and you better see the next one otherwise nobody takes you seriously anymore.

Back in the 80's nobody knew who Mike Tyson was... he was just a footnote in the newspapers if they even reported on it at all.
You could question 100 people and maybe 2 had an idea who he actually was.

wait... I might have something backwards here, but I don't exactly know what :think

NOBODY in the mainstream knows who Deontay Wilder is ya ****in idiot! After beating Berbick Tyson became one of the biggest ATHLETES on Earth, nevermind fighters. Circa late 80's, Tyson was by far the most popular athlete on Earth - even more popular than Michael Jordan.

This is literally THE dumbest question ever! How old are you? 11?

Remember when Tyson wore a shiny robe and a plague mask to try to intimidate his opponents?

So you're saying the Monday after beating Berbick Iron Mike was the one of the "BIGGEST ATHLETES" on earth? How many top 10 fighters did Tyson beat at that point, Berbick included?

first of all tyson became youngest belt holder ever so that would generate more buzz then what wilder has done.

2nd tyson was on televison shows even before he won title. He was maneged right and also was the real deal and delivered spectacular ko's.

Mike was a world famous star. Show a pub full of men a photo of Wilder and 95% of them won't have a clue who he is.
