This is a difficult fight for both...I think Hopkins would attempt to get inside and stay there...he would press and attempt to mug Nunn...I think he makes the fight ugly, and wins in the process. Hopkins W12 for me.
I reckon Hopkins stops him late rounds. He wouldn't tire him with body work like Toney did, but he could tire him by strength and walking him on to that straight right.
Nunn. Hopkins is overrated at MW, IMO. Greatly skilled, but who on earth did he beat at MW that's in the same league as Nunn?! Nunn, in his prime, is one the best fighters I've ever seen. Sublime!
Nunn has all the tools to give Hopkins fits and win a decision. But I don't think he could execute the necessary fight plan to beat Hopkins. Despite his height and reach he all too often gave it up and was willing to stand in front of his opponent and trade shots. Also Hopkins was a tall middleweight himself, Nunn wouldn't enjoy the usual size advantage he was used to. Hopkins would win a close decision or stop him late, his pressure, sneaky right hand against a southpaw stance, inside game and dirty tactics would be too much for Nunn.
Tremendous matchup Nunn in his prime was excellent. Stopped Tate, Roldan, and Kalambay. That was his absolute prime. He would have significant height and reach advantages over Bernard. He also posssed excellent movement and punched from unusual angles from a lefty stance. Bernard would try to get inside but would be largely nullified by the jab and straight left. Hopkins would not have the power to seriously hurt Nunn when he did land. I feel Nunn would keep Bernard off balance and on the outside. Nunn would win a clear cut UD.
Toney was announced as 6ft when he fought Nunn and he clearly wasn't 6ft. For most of his fights Nunn was announced as 6'1". He was announced at this height for Toney, Tate, Kalambay and Barkley. Though Nunn does seem rangier than Hopkins so would have a slight height and reach advantage.
What a good fight this would be, I think Nunn would have the edge here in this fight and would win on points.. Is Nunn still in prison for drugs that he never even had..
Hopkins has a tough task here. Nunn is so long and athletic and has a high workrate. Hopkins is more of a rhythm boxer and tended to enjoy handspeed advantages using simple jab-right hands to confuse then break down in his notable wins vs Trinidad, Echols 1 and Glen Johnson. Hopkins has to lose the first 4-5 rounds pretty handily, a true prime Nunn (like the one vs Tate) was a phenom and a rare type of fighter. That speed and pull back reflex counters cant be taught. He was so confident and fought with his hands down. Maybe Hopkins claws back the later part of the fight, he was an awesome mauler and much more aggressive in his prime. But I think he starts his rally too late and I cant see him being so steadfast and determined as Toney was banging away every round even if losing them big just to drain Nunn with body shots. I see Hopkins being outboxed early and going into a shell until he feels comfortable trading sau post 8 rounds which will take a while as Nunn never stopped rat-a-tat in/out turn. Nunn UD 8-4.
