Golovkin’s power has become a bit of an urban legend. I recall a few years ago, young cruiserweight David Imoesiri telling Doug Fischer that he felt Golovkin’s punches more than he did against Alexander Povetkin, with whom he had sparred a year before. If Golovkin really hits as hard as all those sparring partners say he does shouldn't most of them have been concussed/hospitalised/worse? The only time I as a lightweight got hit solidly sparring a middleweight I never competed or even sparred again.

 

I'm still not convinced GGG's defense is sufficient against the elite although sparring does not necessarily equal a fight. I don't think GGG is sparring with the intent to really hurt someone. Sometimes you can really feel someone's power just by sparring them.

 

I always thought if you can take the punch that suggests it's merely 'solid', but if it's a hard punch with full torque from a power puncher that lands on the chin you don't 'feel' it but it jolts you into unconsciousness and freezes your nervous system fuor a split second, even if it doesn't properly concuss you. Getting hit to the brain can't 'hurt' because you're not fully conscious to feel it.

Even if elite boxers don't intend to hurt their sparring partners, their fists are refined weapons that they're sharpening in training, and you'd think there would be more knockouts and concussions in sparring then we're aware of. Maybe I had a glass jaw, but I was fine in a dozen bouts, but was badly concussed with 16 oz gloves. Did I just have a glass jaw, or is my physiological constitution close to typical?

 

I want Kovalev vs Golovkin now!!

Reading this thread, there's too much evidence to deny the claim. The virtually unanimous opinion is that he hits like a heavyweight, and is the biggest puncher they've sparred with.
However, do heavyweights go ham on light heavyweights, or super middleweights for that matter? Golovkin is most definitely hitting them as hard as he can.
