Macklin wellborn was good s**** and that just about sums up Matthews future, Not even euro champ I'm afraid, hard to see him do anything meanifull, Could maybe pick up a pay day or two but that's all,
Wouldnt mind seeing OKane versus Macklin actually, good domestic fight, would sell a mid to big sized arena in ireland id say and make both a bit of cash,
You don't think the new weight was a factor....maybe he was not certain of his stamina and was holding something back? Also he was experimenting with a new...more defensive ...style too don't forget that. He certainly looked a lot better than Andy lee did in several fights before he got a break and a "world title".....
Subtle difference there.Andy looked bad matthew just looked shot, The weight may have been a factor but it doesnt bode well for an attack on a l/middle crown if that is how he is at that weight, As for a more defensive style his face was pretty marked up by a non hitter in Jason Welborn,he looked old and grey just like he did when Heiland asked the questions in their fight, Not saying he should retire(only he can say that) but should set more realistic goals,ie fights with spike,o kane, danny butler etc
Everyone says eamonn is a thorough gent. It's no shame to fall short at the highest level. Wish him all the best for his future, whatever he decides to do.
Don't think it was anywhere near as wide as the judges had it. He surprised me with his chin and engine.
On his way home from the arena ? Hope hes ok !!! Seriuosly fair play to him, put in a big effort and will have done himself no harm at all, he will hopefully get some decent fights out of this in future, he could defo win a British title, Johnson was just a little bit better in all departments last night, hes a dcent fighter but GGG should go through him when they meet.
Unfortunately in my experience when a fighter - particularly a relatively unknown/unproven one - gets off to a truly dreadful start it seems to always be the case that he gets a raw deal on the cards. Its as if judges 'overcompensate' towards the guy that got the great start and are almost 'afraid' to give rounds to the guy who got the awful start. Fear of looking foolish perhaps? Loss of confidence that the guy has a chance - writing him off in their own minds? Whatever it is, it has always been a problem as long as I can remember.
I was reading this thread as the games were on and I personally think you overrate O'Reiily and Brendan Irvine. I thought they would be a bit better from what Ive read on here but theres still good. O'Reilly was very unlucky to not qualify for the Olympics .. so corrupt! It's gonna be hard for him to qualify now as Middleweight is a tough division... Petr Khamukov, Arlen López, Artem Chebotarev, Bektemir Melikuziev.. have already qualified but then there's Dymtro Mytrofanov, Anthony Fowler, Zhanibek Alimkunaly, Adem Killici, Khaibula Masalov, Meriem Nursultanov,Tomasz Jablonski,
Sad news about Billy resigning. I think whoever steps into his shoes will have big shoes to fill. We are lucky with the fighters we have at the moment some elite level fighters hopefully whoever comes into the job can build on what has already gone under Walsh. Bit of a bad day for Irish boxing.
