Well Benitez only trained for 9 days . I'm a pretty big fan of SRL but there's no doubt that he used his economic clout to dictate terms. That's indisputable. The Donny Lalonde fight is probably the most obvious example of it. As a fellow Canadian l was not impressed.
SRL was a great fighter. Sure, some people didn't like him as a personality but it's a bit silly to deny him any credit for anything he did.
Both men were well past their primes and the verdict indecisive. So no. I don't think he was a great middleweight on that evening and neither was Hagler anymore. What you had were two still " very good" fighters and in truth it was still a very good win. But not a fight that either man should be judged too greatly or harshly on.

I'm with you all the way to this sentence. I think it was a truly fantastic win for Leonard. Hardly anyone gave him a chance in hell and something like what he did hasn't been done before or since as far as I know. That tells you really what you need to know about the performance. As for if Ray was a great MW on the night... Nah, not really. He only looked strong for the first half of the fight. His legs were too far gone at that point for him being a great MW.

Ray was 2 to 4 years younger than Hagler, and during that retirement of his when he did TV commentary 4 cash, Hagler was getting hit in z ring. For these 2 reasons Hagler was far more faded than Leonard was. And then it was not only the wear n tear factor, which Hagler clearly had more of: Hagler also conceived ring size, gloves size, fight duration and who knows what more. Hagler sold his belt for cash.
As has been pointed out, it is hard to give a guy credit who constantly won the negotiations due to his popularity with TV companies, as opposed to fighting off a level playing field and proving his superiority. Even in the Hearn's rematch for the S / Middle titles the cretin demanded Tommy weigh no more than 163. ( Never mind the diabolical scoring to give him an undeserved draw ) Smoke and mirrors is the correct description of Leonard.
