Prime white slaving ,*****-master , and war slacker Dempsey ,versus prime Greb and prime Wills.

Dempsey by ko in both cases.

But what if he lost to one, or both?

Very true. Then Dempsey and his fans could say fought the best regardless of style or skin tone. Essentially cleaning out a division.

The sad part is he would have been favored to win in both fights.

"he would have been favored to win in both fights"

Boxing (and all other sports) history is full of favorites who lost.

My take is Wills was better than anyone Dempsey actually defeated, so beating him would really have put Dempsey on a higher level when comparing him to his historical rivals.

*I judge Wills better than Sharkey. He was 37 and Sharkey 24 when the two fought. Wills was at the top longer and was more consistent than Sharkey, and was a more dangerous puncher. The Wills of 1922 or earlier would have been a very stern test for Dempsey.

    Fair position,

but for me it would be a hard sell that Dempsey ever defeated anyone as good as the Sam McVea and Sam Langford that Wills defeated in 1915 and 1916.

    Sharkey is the one possible,

but his big win over Wills was trumped by Paulino Uzcudun blowing Wills' out nine months later. Wills was really up there by the time he got to Sharkey and Uzcudun.

Was Dempsey not a pimp at one point? I've been laying off that angle of the discussion but you seem to want to revive it.

It actually had me thinking which of those early pre-Dempsey champions was what we would label a "good person" for lack of a better term. Corbett, Jeffries, Johnson, Ketchell, McCoy... that's not a savory lot. We can give Dempsey credit, and a lot it, for evolving from his origins into a civilized, wordly and kind fellow. It's a rather remarkable transformation.

It's undeniable Greb deserved a title shot over Brennan Miske Gibbons

I don't want to revive it I'm just making everyone and anyone aware of your past statements on Dempsey, hopefully they will then treat your following ones with due reserve .
You said you were going to address my remarks later but you haven't, despite posting on this thread several times

Now you are asking me if they are true? ok

    NO THEY F*CKING AINT!

In court Dempsey was able to produce proof that he regularly sent money to Cates.Something she admitted when confronted by Dempsey's counsel.
There has never been any evidence that Dempsey was a pimp, white slaver, *****master, or broke in virgins in brothels.
All we have on that are your prior lurid accusations.

It would be nice,[ in fact I think you owe it to the man,] to admit you had no factual basis for your remarks and that you now withdraw them unreservedly. I am going to Porto in
March, if you had said those things about one of my family I would be coming to Lisbon instead, with a writ for libel.

Seamus, where are you getting these accusations about Dempsey????

Is this in some book or source or are you assuming it?

I think that the prosecution are being a bit blinkered into their adherence to their retrospective rankings.

God knows there have been enough cases in their lifetime, where the contender that inspired the most public interest, was not the current #1.

Let’s say that the rankings when Lennox Lewis retired has been like this :
    Champion Lennox Lewis
    1. Chris Byrd
    2. Vitally Klitschko
    3. Roy Jones
Chris Byrd would be the current #1, and he would have beaten the current#2, but a lot of people would have wanted to see Lewis fight Klitschko more, because they would have thought that it would make a better fight.

Why are people so dismissive of the idea of a similar dynamic at some point in Dempsey’s era?

Oh, let's go to the one within arm's reach...

'Kearns told people that Dempsey and Maxine checked into the Gibson so that "Maxine could bring in money servicing guys. It ain't pretty. Dempsey got her customers and his big fists made sure the customers paid up. Back in 1917, the two of them, Dempsey and Maxine, were one helluva mess, until I came along and began to straighten Jack out.'"

Then, there is the broken or dislocated jaw Maxine suffered, also occurring at the Gibson, which some came as the result of Maxine insinuating that Jack threw the Flynn fight but seems rather de rigueur for the relationship they had developed.

Jack claimed in court that Maxine never "worked" while living with him but that seems to go against what a lot others said both at the time and later on.

Take it as you will. Different times, a very young man and certainly a far different level of desperation than most of us will ever experience...
