Vaguely recall Merchant making similar comments about Tubbs in the Witherspoon fight (could be wrong though).

Not worse than the color guy in the Razor Ruddock - Larry Alexander fight though (“Who makes Larry Alexander’s trunks, Omar the Tentmaker?”)

His weight affected him. He moved better whenever he was close to 230. I've seen just about all his fights. I liked him quite a bit. But he didn't come into the Tyson fight in prime shape, and Larry called him out on it. To come in overweight against prime Tyson and stand right in front of him was suicidal. It gave the impression that Tubbs was there for the payday. Yes, he tried, but was in no shape to give his best effort.

He was promised an extra 50k by Bill Cayton if hr came in shape.

Unfortunately Tubbs liked alot of sugar on his donuts.

There was also talk about a backup opponent if he "ate himself out of contention." I read about it in sports illustrated before the fight in 1988 and they use that exact quote.

Some guys are genetically built to look bad. Tubbs, Buster Mathis Sr and Jr....even when in good shape they still look flabby. Sometimes, sure, guys come in too heavy, but I bet even with the best training of his life, Tubbs would still be flabby.

And was there ever a more aptly named figher?

Man that whole broadcast was funny. Mike Tyson's face at the first press conference, "Nobody...speaks English?" Then, when they are showing the film of him saying in 1986 that he wanted to go to Japan "I would love to visit your country...bye bye!" The Sumo wrestler, the Sumo wrestler's diet, Robin Givens "We somehow ended up married...", Tubbs, "I'm one of the best heavyweightses in the world" it was all just brilliant.

Tubbs wasn't gonna successfully run from Tyson anyway. He was probably on the fat side. It's possible that he wanted to come in heavier, probably not.

I'm not sure about the backup opponent for Tubbs but I do know that Jose Ribalta was the backup opponent for Buster Douglas in case he pulls out.

wow. I never knew that. You'd think they could have come up with someone better than the faded Ribalta.

I'll need to double check, I'm 100% certain Ribalta was the replacement opponent.

But only about 70% certain it was for the Douglas fight.

My apologies, I just checked the book.

Ribalta was indeed a backup opponent for Tubbs.

Team Tyson still gave Ribalta a substantial payday and did promise him $1m if Tubbs didn't make enough effort.

Dude, I was going to post this too! I saw this fight recently. Hahaha. What a ****ing idiot. Regardless of whether he got the KO in that fight or not, what myth? There was no myth, Foreman's power had been proven time and time again.

Lmao. Yeah, the part were Mike says "byeeee", that made me lol. If you don't know who Mike Tyson is and you see that, you would think he's a ***. And Robin Givens with the worst acting job of all time while Larry is lapping it all up giggling like a school girl.
