Felix Trinidad's resume at MW W Ricardo Mayorga 26 4 1 W William Joppy 32 1 1 L Bernard Hopkins 39 2 1 Cotton's resume at MW W Sergio Martinez 51 2 2 W Daniel Geale 31 3 0 L Saul Alvarez 45 1 1 On paper, I'd have to say that Cotto has the slight edge. Martinez was the long reigning Lineal MW Champ and Geale was a top 10 former Unified MW champ. In reality though, Trinidad's wins were clearly greater. Those versions of Joppy and a prime Mayorga mop the floor with Cotton. This was a PRIME Mayorga, not the side show freak we saw after DLH. Mayorga was a HUGE WW, re hydrating to a SMW during fight night. 10 months before the Trinidad fight, he had a SD loss against Cory Spinks for the undisputed WW title. A fight where Mayorga was the aggressor, and frankly did more than Spinks to win a decision imo. Going into the Trinidad fight, Mayorga should of been the undisputed WW champ, while Trinidad was comng off a 2 and a half year lay off. It was a dangerous fight for Trinidad, but he cracked Mayorga's chin and Tito'd him into oblivion, just like he did with Vargas, DLH and Joppy. A prime Mayorga would of Margarito'd Cotton without the bricks. Speaking of Joppy, he had the power and reach to give Cotton a beating as well. He'd give any MW today a beating barring Bummyluvkin. Meanwhile, a MW Trinidad knocks out Geale and Martinez faster than Cotto did and also badly beats up and knocks out Canelo. Easy easy fights for Trinidad.
Cotto imo.. I'd also say he was the better Technical fighter of the 2 as well.. Tito was the Better Puncher.
Lol. So you think Cotton beats Trinidad both at their absolute peak? That would be a nasty beating, I fear for Cotton's life in that fight. The puncher Trinidad during his weight climbing days beats Cotton too, knocks him out early.
Trinidad fights in straight lines and has a very basic style.. Cotto has far better skill set imo.. H2H at 147 prime for prime, i think its a 50/50 fight.. The way cotto fought Margarito for 6 rounds in the first fight was brilliant and looked very similar to the clinic Oscar put on Tito so based of that i have to favor Cotto, slightly.
You're mistaking the power punching Trinidad in the late 90's and early 00's to the boxer puncher in the early to mid 90's. H2H at 147 Trinidad has the height, reach, power and stamina to outlast Cotto and knock him out. There's no way Cotton can last 12 rounds against Trinidad's chunky punches, he had stamina for days, and Cotton's stubbornness would literally have him killed. Those body punches would soften Cotto up for the left hook all night long.
Who do you think has the better MW resume, Trinidad or Cotton? I've stated my opinion in the opening post, I just want to see what other people think.
Tito had the punch to bail him out in Bad situations, yes. he was getting outboxed by Oba Carr until he got Koed. But he also had a tendency to get dropped early on in fights...Carr, Campas, Vargas,Hopkins, Reid all knocked him down what makes you think Cotto with his skills and Power cant do the same As these guys? You have to remember if your a good Boxer you had a chance against tito, and Cotto has A great skill set..
I'm assuming we're talking about pre brick Cotton, who had better punch resistance. Trinidad didn't just have the punch, he had the stamina, reach and height. And we're not just talking about average power either, we're talking about ATG power at WW. Once Cotton gets hit by that first left hook, his whole game plan is gonna go out the window and he'll go into survivor mode and make it into a fight. Let's not forget that Cotton had questionable stamina, especially at WW. He'll get faded late in the fight, and dragged into deep waters. The body shot will open up for the left hook or straight right. Cotton has never faced someone with Trinidad's power barring the brick fight.
We'll agree to disagree on the matter, but where did titos power go once he got caught Stacking his wraps? JS....
Nowhere. He knocked out MW contender Hacine Cherifi who had only been previously stopped once then cracked the iron chinned Mayorga's chin and ruined him forever. Roy Jones on his fight vs a fight old Trinidad said that Trinidad was one of the hardest punchers he faced.
