Former boxing pro, European champ and amateur world champion Sinan Samil Sam is at death's door. The 41 year old turk is suffering from liver failure due to excessive alcohol addiction. He's been waiting for a liver donation but now his condition is very critical. His friends are more or less waiting, ready to say goodbye.
This is a current picture of him:

His doctor said he may get a liver transplantation next week. So there may yet be some good news.

Damn I used to quite like Sam. Great chin and a very tough guy. He was a high quality amateur as well. Junior and senior world amateur champion at LHW and SHW respectively. Also won a bronze in the world amateur championships too.

I liked his nickname too ''Bull from Bosporus''

I hope he pulls through. :-(

So they can foresee that there might be a braindead liver donator next week? Interesting

He quit boxing in 2008 and his liver failed in 2010. I'm still trying to figure out how he managed to drink that much in two years :-(

Yeah, they said the president will deal with it. He couldn't get his sister's because of all the pounds he gained.

Who's to say he hadn't already been drinking heavily before the end of his career?

That's nothing, it can happen far more quickly if you keep a Bukowskian pace.

I'm frankly surprised we've not heard any news like this regarding Kelly Pavlik.

He was probably a heavy drinker for most if not all of his career, or at least a bit partial to it.

He claimed liver failure was a genetic thing before but he might be drinking when he was active, yeah. Considering he was never in good shape.

Yeah he didn't seem the most dedicated. Probably would've been a CW if in optimum shape. Given his excellent amateur career, I wonder just how good he might have been had he been more dedicated.

I first became aware of him when he and Danny Williams fought for the European HW title. It was broadcast live on TV over here at the time, IIRC. This was back when Williams was good.
