He was supposed to fight Tyson when after demolished Danny Williams but promoter didn't like the money so Williams got the shot to bits Tyson and the title shot at Vitali afterwards. He might have been a top contender instead of a "fringe-euro level" with better promotion and dedication. Would've probsbly beaten Maskaev as well.
I remember when he won the world amateur career, and put a bet on him to win a world title. It all went wrong for him early in his pro career. He had a bad foot. Can't remember what the problem was but they kept operating on it. The end result was that pretty early in his career he couldn't do any roadwork again. After that, his weight and stamina became an issue. Guess this was in the days before the aqua-aerobics *******s that Wlad does.
Cheers. Think I might have seen them, would've been a long time ago if I did though. As far as I'm aware, the only time he hit the canvas during his career was in the first round of the Juan Carlos Gomez fight and even then that looked like a case of his foot getting tangled with Gomez's and then slipping off balance. He did get caught with a shot at the same time though.
I might p*** a few people off here so I apologise in advance. The man has drank himself to near death, there must have been a point where he was told by a professional "if you carry on drinking you will die". I'm sure that would have happened a few times. There are people who have not damage themselves, lived clean lives who need transplants but this self destructive idiot is getting the Turkish president saying he will help him out. I personally think that is disgusting.
He wasn't hurt but the ref probably made the right call. His chin was very tough but obviously not a good attribute to have for your post-boxing life.
It probably came out of nowhere as he was hospitalized shortly after his active sport career so I don't think that's the case. But I see your point.
Yeah I understand why the ref called it. He certainly looked the granite-jawed type. Big square bolder sized head with a short neck.
Just had a look at his record and was surprised to see he never actually contended for a world title, considering how many familiar names he shared the ring with (and didn't lose to even half of them!) I remember when I joined the boards SSS was considered very much "in the mix" at heavyweight.
Quite likely that he was a heavy drinker when he was boxing as well.... Definitely didn't appear to take great care of his body. Still was a decent HW despite that though.
