That's nonsense. He defended that title against zombies. Only McCline was even top-10 ranked and he turned out to be a bust. Those cannot be compared to Louis/Holmes who were defending an actual, recognized belt.
You're talking about greatness based on title defences. Those guys set records. They are not ATGs. If Wlad is an ATG for title defences , why isn't Vitali?
He handled Peter , Purrity and Sanders better than Wlad did. The guys Wlad lost and went life and death against were exposed as C level nobodies by guys who are apparently nowhere near as great as him. How can Wlad be greatest of all time for beating people other lesser guys also beat? Greats don't perform like he did against Povetkin and Peter.
Does anyone know where these guys were ranked when Wlad fought them? Peter II, Brewster II, Thompson II, Leapai, Wach, Mormeck, Pianeta, Rahman. Seems like there's a lot of filler on his resume. But then again, the same can be said for Holmes.
DM has 14 defenses of a title but will live in enfamy for ducking RJJ who was the real recognized division number 1. Sven Ottke's problem is that the division is barely 30 something years old Farley young in boxing terms who's only other real notables are Calzaghe and Ward.
Some say Jones ducked DM. You can't claim one guy is great based on Title defences and then neglect another guys greatness based on the exact same criteria.
I didn't say it mattered I didn't diminish what DM had done. I said RJJ was the divisions recognized number 1
And RJJ should have been required to go to Europe to face DM when he was the recognized division. Number 1, why? And I didn't neglect DM. I just didn't mention him, considering thus thread is about Wlad. But if you want to go that route. DM's 14 pales in comparison at LHW to Wlads 18 at the powerhouse heavyweight division. Where Wlad is undisputed #1, and DM was second fiddle at LHW to RJJ
Wlads never been undisputed. Vitali was champion and #1 for large swaths of his career. It wasn't a 'powerhouse' division either. Guys from lower weights moved their to find success cos their own lighter divisions were too competitive. His 18 streak is littered with cans like Mormeck, Pianeta, Wach , Lepai , Austin and the ghost versions of Thompson , Brewster and Rahman. He didn't even look good against any of them.
Well you have your criteria. Me and history have ours. 3rd most consecutive title defenses 2nd most Title defenses in the Heavyweight division. Is enough to put him in an ATG category for us. You have it how you want it in your world.
We better take Frazier off the ATG list so , since he only ever successfully defended the title 4 times.
