The versions of Brennan,Miske,Firpo,Tunney, Carpentier & Gibbons that Dempsey fought v Joe Louis over 15rds. Predictions?
Louis beats them all. Tunney would give him the most trouble, but Louis would eventually catch up to him the way he did with the other cuties who caused him problems.
Would he? Tunney had a great chin and wasn't foolish in the ring like Walcott and Conn were. Walcott got caught showboating late, and Conn opted to slug when he likely had the match won on points.
Louis hammers all including Tunney. If a rather rusty, inactive Dempsey almost closed the deal on Gene, Louis- a better finisher against higher quality foes- would have more than ample chance. I'm scratching my head wondering what exactly Tunney accomplished in the heavyweight ranks that would suggest for him to beat the greatest fighter to ever occupy the division?
Dempsey Tunney II was Jack's third fight in under a year. Now I don't think Jack ever recaptured his form from his early days it's evident he didn't but his rust should of been shaken off by this point. Tunney still managed to dominate him and in 20 rounds of combat won 19 of 20 rounds. He likely would of stopped Dempsey had the bouts been scheduled for normal championship rounds of 15. The one round he did lose the 7th of the rematch - I have always been of mind that he beats the count. Could he have survived on his bicycle without those few extra seconds of recovery is the question for me. However as it unfolded he did survive and rather easily. Dempsey still had a little burst of speed to try and follow up his advantage a burst of speed Joe Louis never exhibited. He just shuffled along and mowed you down. I think Louis's struggles with Conn, Walcott show that he could have some difficulty catching up to good movers. His struggle with Schmeling showed that effective timing and counter punching along with a good strategy could also disrupt him. Tunney brought all of these attributes into the ring with him. While his resume at heavy is light, he did handily defeat Dempsey twice, stopped Gibbons, defeated a young a Risko. The game Heeney and although not a heavy Greb who bested many heavies of the day. Tunney's good wheels, solid chin, toughness and ring IQ make him a tough out for anyone pre-sixties In the division.
I think he convincingly destroys all of them and in some cases with less trouble. Tunney maybe the only threat, but I still think Louis wins.
Tunney did let down his guard against Dempsey and was almost punished for it. Suppose that had been Louis in there instead of a faded Dempsey. I don't completely write off Tunney's chances, however in a 15 rounder, I do think Louis would catch up to him eventually, probably later in the fight, and when he did that would be that.
(Peak) Tunney-Louis sounds like a great fight to me. I wonder if Gibbons may have a dark horse chance? Dempsey really didn't get control of Tommy until he gave up trying to KO him and switched to mauling. That's not really shaft in Louis's quiver. I think Louis likely beats Gibbons, but Joe would be trying to box his way to a KO, and I think we shouldn't simply write off Gibbons as a competitive opponent.
