Remarkable that a faded Eddie Machen lasted 10 with Frazier.

He paid for it big time. And as soon as he hit Joe with a hard punch Joe dropped the hammer on him.

 

He survived Liston, he extended Frazier, but Ingo just iced him!

 

True, but let's keep in mind that anything can happen in a boxing match. It would have been interesting to see a rematch between Machen and Ingo.

Eddie Machen is a favorite of mine.

 

I think we're being a little hard on everyone mentioned.
Joe was still green and Eddie had some slickness still in his tank; he did give a green Quarry his first loss at around the same time.
Against Sonny, a younger, more prime Eddie played the slick game even better; I guess an argument could be made that he fought to survive and given his skill package, he was able to do that but still looked formidable IMO (I've got it on tape).
Ingo? I think he was flying under the radar at the time and Eddie came out too aggressive and if you get caught by an Ingo bomb, anyone's gonna get hurt. That two fisted beat down in the corner at the end was painful to watch. A rematch could have seen a Machen UD but we can only speculate at this point.

Two other points:
Interesting that the Ingo-Eddie bout took place on 9/14/58 in Sweden. Exactly ten years later on 9/14/68 Ellis and Floyd fought in Sweden for the WBA Title.
And...notice how Angie Dundee steered clear of Machen when the young Cassius Clay was on the rise. I don't think they wanted any part of Machen's skill package while the young Cassius was maturing.

 

I think Machen would have given Ali a better challenge than Zora Folley did.

 

Hey red! But, to be honest, not much more of a challenge in March of 67.
I just think Eddie was taboo for Cassius circa late-62 or at any point in 1963.

 

Are we sure Ali avoided Machen? After all it was slicksters that machen lost to or looked bad against. Seems to me like Machen would have been the one to suffer from that outcome. He was the one who had been sitting in top ten forever and wasnt getting any younger. He realistically had more to lose in that matchup than Ali.

 

Ingo hit him with everything before he stopped him, for a late stoppage by an incompetent referee.

Which top heavy did Frazier actually knock out?

 

Machen had only been stopped once before, so how is it remarkable that "he lasted 10" ?

Frazier was 12-0 and had only fought 1 good opponent (Oscar Bonavena) and had not convincingly won that fight at all.

By a hindsight cold ana1ysis, stoppage win over Machen by Frazier at that point is more remarkable.

 

Ingo would not go near a rematch though Machen repeatedly tried for one.I think he got caught cold, it happens, see Maxim v Sheppard ,and the result of the rematch.

 

That's not surprising, he had nothing to gain by fighting Machen again. Would it have been a huge money fight ? I doubt it.
