Remarkable that a faded Eddie Machen lasted 10 with Frazier.

Frazier's best match up in a style sense is vs boxers his size or smaller that do not have a lot of power. Machen was durable but faded. Frazier pounded on him but lacked the big time power to take him out earlier.

 

Machen lost that case and rightly so. He had no claim to force ingo into a rematch other than the fact that he held him up to a rematch clause at the eleventh hour before their fight. He got obliterated fair and square and ingo became an overnight sensation and the #1 contender. He would have been stupid to fight a rematch when the more lucrative title shot loomed around the corner. Pretending ingo avoided machen out of fear is ridiculous given the context and the fact that ingo damn near killed him.

 

Good crafty fighter. Sort of a Jimmy Young of his day.

 

About as remarkable as Quick Tillis lasting 10 with a 19 year old umpteen fight Tyson.

 

Machen was a very smart fighter. He wasn't the type to just stand in front of Frazier and let him pound away with the left hook.

I remember reading an article about him by the excellent Boxing Writer Jimmy Cannon documenting his descent into mental illness, and ultimately, his untimely death. He was another sad boxing statistic outside of the ring.

 

As i recall Crafty old Fox Machen tried to Sucker Joe by Feigning being Hurt.. And trying to Nail Joe coming in to Capitalise with a sneakly Uppercut, Old Eddie was winding Down but the crafty old devil was still Trying to set Traps...

Eddie Also of Course Added to Young Jerry Quarry's Education a touch of Master and Pupil on that occassion.

 

Who said or pretended fear was a factor? I've merely said that Johannson did not want to fight Machen again and that maybe the result would have been different if he had. I gave Joey Maxim as an example ,Curtess Sheppard blasted him out in one round,20 days later they met again and Maxim won 9 of the 10 rds, to take an easy decision.

 

Thats the punch that woke Joe up and resulted in Eddie getting knocked out the following round.

A Further Distant Recollection, Eddie was reported to suffer from Depression on occassions, I think he might of been Sectioned at one point in his career to combat these difficulties, It was a shock when it was reported that Eddie had been found dead and the Speculation veered between Intentional Suicide (whilst Emotionally Disturbed), or a Sleepwalking Accident... It was a bad month for Shocks as old Rival Zora Folly also Died from what seems to be a fluke swimming pool accident.. As Boxing Illustrated reported they were rival birds of a feather who had parallel Careers and the Curtain came down on them sO close together
