"He was never world class and barely Euro level most times." That is not my issue. My issue is that Danny Williams would have been very world class in Liston's era, compared to guys like Roy Harris and Willi Besmanoff and an old Nino Valdes, this 265 lb.er with a strong chin and punch would have been very formidable. Certainly there was no one like him back then.
Vitali has heavy hands, bit you're right he's not a swing for the fences type at all. Tyson and Vitali fought two of the same opponents who commented on their power. One of them Julius Francis said Vitali hit harder than Tyson. Vitali stopped Francis in two rounds. The other was Danny Williams. Williams said Tyson who often swung for the fences early hit a little harder, but Vitali was far more consistent with his power. Universum who managed both Vitali and Wlad said Vitali hit harder! But keep in mind this was before some of Vitali's shoulder and back issues that required surgery. In common opponents between Wlad and Vitali, Vitali seemed to hurt Peter faster, and you can say the same for the ultra durable Purity. **No way Liston is lasting the distance at the hands of a smarter and much larger may who would outbox him and be the best puncher he ever fought. Liston's chin would not last. In fact, he was exposed by lesser punchers, and keep in mind when I say exposed I'm saying rocked, floored, or KO'd**
I guess being British and Commonwealth champion is nothing? Tyson and his knee? Every loser has an excuse. I didn't notice him limping or not throwing punches with serious intent in the next couple of rounds. It is certainly a fair point that Tyson was 38 and well on the way down.
Both Williams are overrated, and yes I'm talking about Cleveland too. Vitali made Danny Willaims his personal pinata. He did what he pleased. Even Roy Jones was extremely impressed with Vitali that night.
Tyson stopped Francis in the second round too. They both also fought Orlin Norris and he didn't make it out of the first round vs either. Vitali did stop Ribalta in 2, while Tyson took 10 rounds. But Tyson fought him as a prospect in 1986, Vitali fought him 12 years later. Do you have a source for that Danny Williams interview? Because the interview I read, a couple of years back Williams said something different.
Audley Harrison knocked Danny Williams out in the first round, Would Audley be a world class fighter in Listons era too?
there was no one like him in contention for sure. fat unfit loafers didn't get into contention back then. ed, being fat does not improve your boxing skills.
No he wouldn't. DeJohn and Valdes, whom you say were his inferiors ,notched up wins over world rated opponents. Valdes beat: DeJohn McMurtry Carter Summerlin Bethea Erskine Richardson C*ckell Jackson Sys Neuhaus Charles Agramonte De John beat: Cleroux Hunter Richardson Powell Besmanoff Baker Miteff Williams could not even beat Sunil Sam,in fact he was stopped by him! Williams did not have a strong chin either. If it wasn't your issue, why make the statement? A statement which is emphatically incorrect?
Tyson destroyed Francis sooner than quitali. Francis and Williams fought a very bad version shot Tyson who was far away from his prime but quitali was 100% against Francis and williams.
I have never been a fan of the logic that says: “A can’t have been such a great puncher, because B knocked out C faster than he did, and nobody says that B was an all-time puncher” You can find a case where you can corner anybody with that. I think that with all the great punchers, you can go through their record and find a fight where you think “what was going on there then?”
This content is protected How would Liston deal with Vitali when VK is better: 1) Managing distance. 2) Harder puncher than Williams. 3) Better defensively. 4) Will wear Sonny down with any clinches as he is about 40(!) pounds heavier. 5) Countering.[/QUOTE]
