Is Calzaghe slated enough for sitting home with the WBO belt?

This made me Laugh... With your Passion for Toney and Jones, it didn't even cross my mind you were this side of the pond. But it does explain your fondness for Graham who I did love to watch but he had plenty of chances and often came up a little short when it mattered. You must be a big Kell Brook Fan. I agree by the way that Ben was awesome but he lacked stamina for 12 rounds and was always vulnerable the longer the fight went and took far too much punishment for his own good. Still one of my top 5 favourite fighters though.

I won't go through Joe's Resume as it is not short of holes as already stated. What I will say is that there were plenty of good solid names with decent records. Many were world champions and he thought over many years. His amateur record was also excellent so he had the pedigree too. Was he protected? yes to a certain degree but Toney, Jones and Hopkins were just as shy of Joe and had no reason to fight an unbeaten, unorthodox, unknown (to many) young lion and Joe could make good money doing the UK circuit. Its too easy to say Joe ducked them because he didn't. He just refused to concede both the Money and Home Advantage which is exactly what those guys were insisting on. He eventually went when the Money was equal and he felt superior enough to overcome the home advantage that Hopkins and Jones had. Hopkins miscalculated and Jones knew Calzaghes hands were shot and had no knock out punch so assumed he would be quicker but he wasn't (at least after the 2nd Round).

Calzaghes key attributes were his Ring Intelligence, His chin (forget the flash knockdowns and forearm smashes), his hand speed and his Stamina/work rate. Stylistically, he was all over the show & he lacked concussive power. He also had his Dad (a failed musician) train him. I think he also lacked a bit of self confidence earlier in his career and needed his back against the wall to bring out the best of him. I believe the better the opponent and the more was at stake, the better he was.

We can speculate over who would have won but Jones never beat a prime Hopkins (was it not the first world title fight for both) and as you stated never beat a prime Toney (couldn't do the weight). Most fighters had lost before they got in the ring with him, were smaller than him and his style of fighting meant he always looked sensational (much like another of your lads Nazeem). Unfortunately, he decided to mess about at Heavyweight against 2nd drawer opposition where his speed compensated for size until he got hit good and proper so if you just concentrate on his 175 and below record, his resume is not extensively great as you yourself admit but stylistically he always looked great against good but often smaller opposition. I personally think Hopkins would have beat him had they met again anytime soon after their first encounter which is probably why Jones avoided him for so long.

I would be interested to know why you think Jones would have beat Calzaghe had they met earlier in their careers. Not sure he would have stopped Calzaghe who was a big super middle weight not a small middleweight like Jones was knocking out earlier in his career. Jones was clearly fast but so was Joe (certainly faster than Hopkins or Toney) but ultimately I just think Joe may have outworked him and gassed him out like he did most fighters. The only fighter I have doubts about is Hopkins who was just as smart in terms of ring craft, just as durable and maybe could have gone the pace a little better in his earlier career.

Ultimately Jones, Toney and Hopkins were great but so was Calzaghe and sometimes feel the need to fight his corner when people question is record or that he never thought away from home or that he ducked the best or Hopkins was past it when in reality his record is good, he always found a way to win (usually because of his insane Stamina) even on a bad day. He did fight outside of the UK and won, Jones and Hopkins both turned down the opportunity to fight Joe in the UK for good money likewise Calzaghe refused to fight in the USA and Hopkins was still a sensational fighter 8 years ago. Was he better than the three Americans? Probably not all 3 but if he was as bad as some make out both Hopkins and Jones would have beat him even late on in their careers.

Anyway less old has beens... What about Quigg and Frampton? Alas I find it hard to be objective here as I have been to all of Quiggs fights over the past 4 or 5 years and think he has done really well to get to this level as technically he is quite limited but he has a lot of power at the weight, has great stamina and will not quit. Frampton is clearly a great fighter but think Quigg may stop him. I don't think he can win on points as Frampton is technically a level or 2 above him. I just have doubts over his durability and suspect he will fight quite defensively and try and pick Scott off but if he gets caught he will stay caught.

As an impartial observer who do you think wins?

 

The only people who slate Calzaghe fall into one or all of the following 3 categories:

1- They are butthurt 'Zaggers ruined their heroes

2- They have massive willies on their foreheads and DKSAB

3- They need to be taken outside and shot in the face

 

and yet only one person that they all apply to, Superhans.
