Yes after Bowe got hammered to the point of near death, something that I doubt Leon would stick around long for.
I'll use the version in the relevant decade that I think is the best. For the 1970s team : 1971 Frazier beats 1991 Tyson 1974 Ali beats 1990 Holyfield 1973 Foreman beats 1999 Lewis 1978 Holmes beats 1992 Bowe 1973 Norton beats 1994 Moorer 1970 Cooper beats 1995 Bruno 1977 Young beats 1991 Tucker 1976 Lyle beats 1991 Ruddock 1979 Shavers beats 1993 Morrison 1972 Patterson beats 1995 Seldon For the 1990s team : 1995 Botha beats whatever f-ing Wepner 1994 McCall beats 1970 Chuvalo 50-50, can't decide : 1970 Quarry and 1996 Witherspoon 1978 Spinks and 1996 Golota 1970 Bonavena and 1995 Mercer
I wouldn't say that, but Leon boxed well against Ali, despite the ridicule he undeservedly gets. He slipped punches pretty well with very good head movement and employed a Frazier-esque weaving game plan to outwork a lazy version of Ali. Exceptional performance from a novice fighter in a 15 rounder.
To be fair, the 1990s team Azzer provided, as Mendoza already mentioned, does lack some of the better possible players. I think Buster Douglas, Ike Ibeaubuchi, David Tua and perhaps a 1999 Vitali Klitschko would be good contributions. On the other hand, Chuck f--ing Wepner handicaps the 1970s team badly. Larry Middleton, Joe Bugner, Jimmy Ellis or even someone like Gregorio Peralta would be better pick.
Tyson vs Frazier (early blowout) Holyfield vs Ali (tough fight) Lewis vs Foreman (older, wilier LL schools Foreman) Bowevs This content is protected (tough call) Moorer vs This content is protected Botha vs Wepner Bruno vs Cooper (wipeout) Tucker vs Young Mcall vs Chuvalo Ruddock vs Lyle Morrison vs Shavers (don't trust Morrison's jaw in this) Witherspoon vs Quarry Golota vs Spinks (blowout) Seldon vs Patterson (even 70s Patterson has skill & power to win) Mercer vs Bonavena Bonus: Old Holmes vs Old Liston. (boxing clinic) I borrowed Kevin's post and made a couple of changes, but as mentioned some of these fights could go either way.
I agree with Weppner being lucky to make the team and think the 1990's team could have been much stronger. Frazier over Tyson to me goes against the grain. When two seek and destroy punchers at heavyweight meet and trade the most powerfull puncher, the bigger man, and the man with the better chin wins 9 out of 10 times. Tyson also has more weaponry.
I think Frazier's comparable in size and in durability to Tyson. I think Frazier was the better fighter. More stamina and he threw more punches. But Tyson is the harder puncher, punch-for-punch. Tyson was not at his absolute best in the 1990s and Frazier was prime in 1970-'71, so I'd certainly pick Frazier.
Frazier Ali Foreman Holmes Norton Botha Bruno Young McCall Lyle Shavers Witherspoon Golota Patterson Mercer Old Holmes Overall, 70's takes it for me 9-7.
I kinda tried to pair them off as best I could, I couldn't really find similar fighters to Tua, Ike, Briggs etc from the 70s, id already used Frazier and Shavers and Lyle etc. I thought Botha and Wepner kinda made a good pairing? I also wanted to create matchups which I felt would be competitive and intriguing as opposed to quick blowouts.
