Why didn't he get a title shot? I'm thinking he could have received one from 1893-1900. Was there any demand and offers for Choysnki vs Corbett, Fitzsimmons, or Jeffries?
Are you saying there was a Religion line at heavyweight? I'm not sure about that. From WW 1 to WW2, the Jews had a champion in one of the original 8 weight classes.
I'll agree with that. Choynski prime, however, was in the 1890's. Choynski's losses to Sharkey, McCoy, and Walcott in 1900 probably made him a bad pick for a title shot that year, even if he defeated Maher in 1900.
There was the Pole bar and the Jew line, not quite as strictly held as the Color line but still significant. Even Tommy Burns said "No Hebrews". Choynski was pre-WW1, and also he didn't adopt and 'Anglo' or Irish name.
I did not know that. Are you sure? I checked Wiki, they disagree, but they are also not always right. Is Wiki way off in this case?
Maybe so, but I see conflicting sources and to use the old Bert Sugar line there are no photos of him in the shower. Some people picked boxing names that made them sound more ethnically appealable, but, in this case, I can't see Smith being one of them in his time.
I think it just didn't happen. He had a good claim, but there was always somebody with a slightly better claim, at the critical times.
