Do fighters really get old or.....just figured out?

I think there's a miscommunication with the OP and the other forum members. A lot of people might think he's stating the "rule" and not the "exception", I think he's stating the "exceptions". In other words, it's not that ALL fighters haven't aged and just get figured out, but it could apply to some. The example he gave was Cotto; obviously Cotto isn't "shot" like some thought, maybe he was just "found out". And I'd agree, because once you're shot, you can't become "unshot". As for Ali, maybe Larry was just better on the night, or maybe he'll always be Ali's kryptonite. Same way elite teams like the Patriots struggle with so-so teams like the Dolphins at times.

For those who think he's referring to every single "old" fighter, rethink for a second.

As to the OP, I disagree with your examples but I see what you're saying. I don't think it's the rule, but there are exceptions.

Regarding Roy, are you saying he lost because he stepped up his competition?

Are you telling us that Glen Johnson was a better fighter than the likes of Toney, Hopkins and Griffin etc?

The names that you mentioned are anomilies. When you compare the success of those older fighters to the rest of the boxers on earth today or in history, you might not reach 1% out of 100 in terms of the comparison of fighters who were/still successful over the age of 37. And anyone who picked Ali over Holmes was on cocaine back then.

 

Jones' own trainer said he was starting to slip before he was knocked out.. Of course fighters get old. Every individual is different.

 

Ali was 38 when he fought Larry. He had already been through the Frazier fights and was no where near his prime. Not taking anything from Larry because he was a great fighter but Ali was just old because no way could Larry beat him in his prime. Larry was not a better fighter than Ali.

 

Fighters get old and also get figured out. Depends on which ones you are talking about.

Tarver was a very good fighter, but he wasn't a big step up and Roy beat him in their first fight.
