The Sad part is that many have forgotten the nice run Martinez had at Middleweight

I definitely enjoyed Martinez's run. Based on his willingness to take legitimate risks, I think he was a more dominant champion than Cotto and GGG.

Yeah, he was great. Has anyone seen his documentary on netflix? Thought it was really interesting. Quite sad as well in some regards

 

Sergio is a sad story even know he achieved so much, seeing him having to force and be the b side to a slob like Chavez still gets me mad

 

He had a great run and won't be forgotten anytime soon by proper fans who watched him.

It's a shame he had poor management early on. Having an un-Argentinean style didn't help him early on in his career at home and perhaps moving to Spain wasn't the best idea. I always felt that he may have got more chances if he moved to America earlier.

He seemed to get avoided a bit towards the end of his career, too. I'm British so i didn't mind seeing Barker, Macklin and Murray get a shot at him, but there were better fights out there for him.

 

The run the OP points out is actually a very good run of wins, including the Macklin win, who, for me, beat Sturm.

Unfortunately there will be some people who will just look at that list and write them off as Euro bums, hype jobs and exposed fighters.

 

Yeah he had a great run and was a great champion. I think him in his prime against Golovkin would be a great fight and you couldn't completely write him off. Everybody dud against Pavlick.

 

Prime Martinez vs GGG would've been an amazing fight.

 

I was a fan, one of my favorite fighters in the sport.
But the legacy should have ended during his return home in Argentina against Murray. That was his last decent performance, while actually losing of course, but at that point he could still fight back.

The Cotto "fight" was the crippled man's last cashgrab wich left the division's championship in shambles.
But I have to be honest here, I would have done the exact same thing in his position, can't fault him for that in any way.

We're going to miss that no-look left hand fight ender of his.

 

Hell, that first fight with Williams is a modern classic. One of my favorite fights. I loved Paul n I picked him to win but I think serge shoulda got the nod. Very very close fight though. The back n forth was amazing. I also picked pavlik to beat him n kelly was in fact whooping him...people were writing Martinez off after 8 rounds I think it was n then Sergio came out for the 9th n had completely switched his game up n sent kelly back to his corner a bloody mess after 3 minutes.

 

It looks like a nice run on paper, but it's actually pretty average.

Williams was weight-drained in the rematch. Pavlik had already lost to Hopkins. Chavez Jr. has lost every time he's stepped up. Barker's not that good, same with Murray. Dzinzurik never beat anyone of note.
