The Sad part is that many have forgotten the nice run Martinez had at Middleweight

How the hell was Williams "weight drained"? Guy NEVER fought above middleweight in his entire career. The Pavlik win was overrated I agree, given that Kelly checked himself into rehab essentially right after the fight.

I agree, I'm a Martinez fan and really liked his style but his resume is overrated by many.

As a Martinez fan do you feel robbed by the fact that he fabricated a beef against Cotto, trying to sell the fight when he knew he was shot, or do you feel like it was fine because he deserved a payday? I felt like it was a slap in the face to all his fans myself, but here are those that believe Cotto just took it to him. To each his own I suppose.

Fine, he wasn't weight-drained. But the fight was still at a catchweight.

And Williams got a gift over Lara, and lost to Quintana.

Williams also fought dumb. He had no idea how to use his height and reach advantage, he had no defense, and he had a habit of lunging. There was absolutely no reason for Williams to have the style he did.

    I'd say it's a bit of both.

The knee was an issue, but he thought he could win. I think he underestimated Cotto.

OK makes sense. It was such a surreal fight to watch for me. Martinez had nothing left IMO. He looked poor in his prior fight, but the injuries he sustained in the Murray fight must have finished him. Even though I don't much care for either fighter, I was looking forward to it. I almost feel like team Cotto knew Martinez was totally shot, because Cotto wanted nothing to do with Martinez a couple years ago when Sergio would have even dropped to 154. Sucks for Sergio to go out like that.

Martinez has been one of my favorite fighters since the turn of the decades, always putting on a great showing vs the best comp he could.

I do have to admit though even though Martinez was a great champ at MW, his run was slightly overrated not as overrated as you know who but 160 has been in bad shape for a few years now.

I also dont agree with regular opinion on the Cotto fight. I think Cotto would have always been a tough fight.

No matter when they fought Cotto would have always been the most skilled fighter he'd been in with.

Wanted Williams to beat him but became a huge Sergio fan after #2.

God Damn that shot was brutal.

One of my favourite fighters in modern times

    Always fought an exciting style

    Didn't duck anyone

Really can't see how anyone would hate him

    :think

Golovkin is a more dominant champion and he has already a longer title reign

However Martinez was exciting and his reign brought new live to 160 and some great fights like the two fights with Paul Williams

Possible, but it's an awful risk to take. Even given the widely accepted view that Martinez was on the decline, he was still a heavy favorite. Nobody could have predicted he would look as bad as he did, or that even with the knee issue that Cotto would hurt him as early and often as he did. I don't even think the fighters know themselves for sure or not whether they are done.... Until someone proves it. They have the ultimate belief in themselves. Some guys do, and get out ahead of time.

The end was sad. Sergio knew that he didn't recover after the surgery, but he wanted that last payday, so he went and took the beating.

Longer...I agree. I don't think it's more dominant until we seem him take a risk.

Golovkin was definitely WAY more dominant against their common opponents, Macklin and Murray, and of course he would handle JCCJ much better than Martinez did.
