You can view half the fight here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLbLGeTHIJA Although the full fight is not here, but we can judge for ourselves who was the better on the shown footage. Louis had trouble vs. a fighter who can move, get low, or overpower him into the ropes. I think Godoy looks a little better in this footage. Too bad the full 15 rounds isn't out there. The judges score cards were very odd. The only rounds in which the three official scorers agreed were the third, eighth (both to Godoy) and the fourteenth (Louis). So the three judges could only unanimously agree on 3 of the 15 rounds.
It was obviously a very hard fight to score, due to Godoy’s unorthodox tactics. I actually see this fight as the biggest mark against Louis’s name. I am actually surprised that Louis haters don’t make more of it.
Godoy out throws and out lands Louis, makes Louis miss, and bulls him into the ropes. Louis lands an occasional hard shot. On the shown film, Godoy is the better, I think. A sloppy type of fight for sure. 10-5 and 10-4 for Louis looks a bit too generous. Curiously enough many in the crowd booed the decision. I have found the score cards in some of Louis matches to be off. Heavyweight Boxing wasn't exactly fair to foreign-born fighters. Tommy Farr did not win a fight in the USA, but we know that is BS. One judge only gave Farr one round of fifteen vs. Louis! Godoy as a foreigner did not have a fair chance on the score cards to beat Joe Louis in Madison Square Garden. I think he would have needed a stoppage win or a very dominant performance.
It is easy to see why Godoy’s tactics didn’t impress the officiators. He was practically crawling on the canvas at some points, and his tactics were negative all the way. He wasn’t going to get the title on that performance.
It's fair to say Louis solved Godoy's particular puzzle in the rematch: http://coxscorner.tripod.com/Images/louis-godoy2.jpg
Never met a Joe Louis hater before. Most highly skilled hwt ever to live. Never in my years have I ever met or heard any trainer disparage Louis. Futch and Arcel showed him nothing but praise and these were the best of the best at what they did.
Godoy fought an awkward and odd fight. At one or several points in the later stages of the bout he began acting very odd in the ring.
Why is a good question? Louis was slow to adapt in the ring during the fight. In the re-match Louis, had the strategy of Jack Blackburn in his corner.
Janitor, Godoy threw more and landed more. You could say he also controlled the action and tempo of the fight ( Ring generalship ). Nothing he did was illegal.
Boggles the mind how someone can watch less than half of a fight (with an obvious agenda in mind) and make a judgement call on it. Most of the experts agreed with the official decision and called into question the lone dissenting Judge, Tommy Shortell. I find it curious how much faith you put in SOME of the experts when they are writing about the Walcott fight but completely ignore them when they dont support your contention. Godoy was an ugly spoiler. Nothing more. Can you really say hes winning rounds in there? Enough to win the fight? No.
"referee: Arthur Donovan 10-5 judges: Tommy Shortell 5-10, George LeCron 10-4 World Heavyweight Title "Louis won sloppily against a bruising, mauling and rushing fighter who knew no fear or retreat." The New York Times The only rounds in which the three agreed were the 3rd, 8th (both to Godoy) and the 14th (Louis). Lecron had it 10-4-1 in rounds for Louis. Godoy thought he was entitled to a draw but the New York Times reported the decision as "eminently fair" - its reporter giving it 10-5 to Louis, stating that other reporters had a similar result"
Louis usually worked them out by the time he fought them again. It wasn't an accident that anyone who caused him problems was beaten more easily the second time around.
