Actually Ward can sell $hit like he had HBO believe that he would fight Kovalev. What he can't sell is his boxing performances.

Easy, he quit fighting. He was only 1-2 good fights away from getting a shot on PPV had he stayed active. The Stevenson fight could've been made easily and put him square on the PPV radar. He fought Goossen instead.
He would probably have already fought on PPV had he not sabotaged his own career with his own poor choices. He's shown a genuine lack of insight in to how his choices have negatively effected his career and instead blamed his lack of success on those around him, namely Goosen. Had he fought and beaten Bute when he had the option to, that may have been PPV, as it would have unified the titles and Bute does have a good fan base. Then perhaps had he gone up in weight to fight Dawson to become a 2 weight champion that would have raised his profile. Then had he not sued Goosen and stayed active, fought a rematch with Kessler, and then perhaps Froch, then perhaps fought Chavez Jr when he moved up, he would be in a very different position. Yes he's boring but Hopkins had plenty of PPV fights where he was the attraction and sold decent PPV numbers and Hopkins isn't exactly the most media friendly character either. Had Ward taken risks, made the right choices and said the right things at the right time he could have been a star.
GGG saying "you're serious?" with a Kazach accent was more entertaining than all of Ward's fights combined

I don't know man. These guys on this board talk about how Ward is P4P number one because he beat Froch and Kessler. But he never fought PPV, didn't fight Stevenson and so on .. he had opportunities. I don't thinl he's a PPV worthy fighter. He MAYBE has the potential if he sells out Madison Square Garden .. maybe. Do you guys believe he could sell out MSG?? :think

Because very few fighters can be PPV stars. If given the option to watch college football or something else for free on a Saturday night, most people aren't going to place down $50-75 for one hour unless it's a blockbuster fight. I think people will be surprised how poorly Cotto/Canelo does. I think it will be a good fight, but I can't help but feel a lot of the hype is being manufactured. Cotto is basically just a businessman now, and once he gets the likely rematch his career will be over.
