Holm cross-trained enough that she could actually show off the superiority of boxing in the venue of MMA, unlike Toney. Plus, she walked away just two years ago while still a top p4p boxer. Toney was beyond shot when he fought Couture.
Toney was done at that stage, his feet were gone. That transition was never going to work out for him at that stage in his career. If you are going to box in MMA you need good mobility, and Toney had none.
All you imbeciles saying that boxing is superior to mma crack me up. Do you think Holly Holm beat RR because she had great boxing footwork? No! It was her ability to defend against RR takedowns the few times RR did grab her. That is not boxing, that is mma. If HH doesnt defend the takedowns we`re not having this conversation. Too many keyboard commandos whove never fought a second in their lives and have never achieved a thing getting far too much enjoyment off of RR loss. pathetic actually.
atsch ...and if ALL she had done was stuff takedowns we also wouldn't be having this conversation. Holm's boxing is 90% of why she won (not only won but dominated). The other 10% was important at key moments, yes, but don't lose perspective here..
here we go again... if a top kickboxer beats a top MMA fighter in an MMA fight does that mean kickboxing > MMA? if that same kickboxer beats a top boxer in a kickbox match does that mean kickboxing > boxing? if then a top judoka beats that kickboxer in an MMA fight, does that mean judo is better as MMA, boxing and kickboxing? if then the boxer beats that judoka in an MMA fight does that mean that the world just turned upside down? if a top pure MMA fighter then beats that boxer again does that make everything scrambled up and makes the world end? No, they're different sports, with different fighters with different strengths and weaknesses. Boxing is my favorite sport, but it's very incomplete if it comes to actual fighting. If a boxer can't defend against kicks, takedowns, elbows, knees, there's a very big chance he won't make it in MMA.
^This, agree on all accounts. Toney was beyond shot, in terrible shape, and retired. It's hilarious how that is always used as the "proof" of how superior is MMA to Boxing.
42 year old shot Toney VS 47 year Old Couture in Couture's chosen sport where he was a champion . And that is all you have..... LMAO
Well if a Boxer goes into a "fight" - you know, where most methods are allowed - this is what you get. Amazes me how Boxers still think they are king when it comes to fighting. Thai, Kickboxers all leave Boxers for dust and that's just the striking arts!
Haha. Ultimately they are athletes/fighters who with the right training and experience can take to any discipline. Naturally there are differences between disciplines but generally when you fight you need physical talent and a certain type of mentality and they all have it. This is why so many fighters have trained in so many different disciplines. Boxing isn't an exception to this rule but boxers haven't cross trained AS MUCH because their talent pool is generally the ghetto and not the college type who might haven't tried wrestling or gone to Karate on a Saturday. Toney is not an example of a boxer moving to MMA. It's a guy looking for a payday. The only reason more MMA haven't moved to boxing is because they want to reach the top of MMA and when they do they are tied up contractually. However the likes of Silva and Jones could have done well.
