Interested in the consensus of the general forum. As a heavyweight where do you rank Holmes in terms of resume, and H2H? I have him as top 5 in both categories.

Number 3 of all time. He fought everyone and never ducked. He had to deal with hate from everyone about Ali and beating up Jerry in front of racist that wanted him to lose. Telling Marciano lovers to go **** themselves. Fighting opponents in the street.
Larry Holmes was honest about the May/Pac fight when everyone was in denial too about how exciting it was going to be.

    The ****?

He OPENLY ducked Greg Page and Pinklon Thomas. Openly, as in he admitted it. He said of Thomas: "If I am going to come back, I can't be fighting these young guys. They got to give me someone I can beat."

He adandoned a belt rather than fight Page.

He also failed to fight Dokes and Coetzee.

Larry is #9 at most. On top of the ducking, his best wins of Norton, Shaver, Witherspoon, and Mercer are not terribly impressive, as these guys were all beaten MORE convincingly by lesser talents. His wins over Norton, Williams and Witherspoon are highly controversial, and he was ultimately unseated by a LHW. For a heavy of that size, that is embarrassing.

Finally, unlike Wladdy, he never unifed a belt.

I will be very generous and say, merely based on volume of defenses, number 9.

No. Spinks won the first fight. There is no great controversy about that. Holmes waltzed through the fight and had trouble letting the the right go all night.

You are conflating the first fight with the second, which was controversial. How old are you?

You could say the same about any champion with a reign as long as his. Look at the murderers row Wlad has been fighting between Haye and Povetkin. He never fought the second best guy in the division, Vitali. He also let Vitali handle all the guys that were stylistically wrong for him.

Wladimir has far more taints on his resume than Holmes, who only ducked Thomas. Page wasn't a money fight and he lost to several Holmes victims.
Greg was 3-1 in his last 4 fights after Berbick popped his cherry. If three wins over Larry Frazier (wpts 10), Renaldo Snipes (wpts 10) and 14-5-1 Rick keller made Page some kind of sensation that's not how I remember it. The Renaldo Snipes win was given the eliminator tag even though Snipes had only won once in his last 3 fights! An eliminator between a man Larry knocked out and the man who lost to Berbick?

The entire situation with Page was a laughable WBC farce and Holmes was applauded by the media for dropping their belt.

His frustrations and willingness to unify with Coetzee are well documented.

These are truly idiodic arguments. Brothers don't fight. It is not the same thing as abandoning a belt to avoid fighting something that you are afraid of. You cannot makde the same argument for any champion...very few have abandoned a belt.

Page was a number 1 contender and Holmes has a responsibility to fight him. That is what CHAMPIONS do.

You like Holmes and are trying to defend him, I get it. But don't say things that are ridiculous. Wlad has unifed titles and beaten everyone put in front of him besides his flesh and blood brother. No the same as throwing a title in the garbage.

I just ask because a lot of these youngsters don't know that when Holmes retired he was a highly unpopular and even discredited champion. He re-habbed his image with the comeback win over Mercer, piggybacking Foreman's popularity. But after his initial reighn, there was a very bad taste in a lot of mouths.

Not sure if you saw it:

Holmes absolutely was not afraid of Page. That's ridiculous.

Irrelevant. He was the #1 contender.
