This actually sums it up very well and it shouldn't be seen as a hate post by peeps. When we're comparing to Greats, you have to start holding the bar high. Mosley was notably past prime by 2007. The prime Mosley was able to get into razor close wars with prime Oscar De La Hoya. The Mosley of 2007 is reduced to only being able to do this against Cotto. Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto are leagues apart. It's still a good win, but people shouldn't get carried away with it. Margarito loss doesn't count. The only difference I found between the Cotto-Malignaggi fight was the knockdown very early on, otherwise Malignaggi was more impressive that night. Miguel Cotto is a VERY good fighter, and for sure if he beats Canelo Alvarez he'd cement that legacy, but if he were to retire after beating Canelo, I don't feel he deserves HOF. Just because there are fighters like Ricky Hatton in HOF, it doesn't mean I agree with their induction either.
I don't think anyone is calling cotto an atg...more like a generational great guys...relax....you are going too far trying to dissect his resume....its very good and hof worthy even in a loss to canelo
By the standard that has already been set it is. Ideally, he would be borderline. But with the bar placed where it has been, he is a lock.
Long career, but he's proven that he was never on the level of the very best. I don't think that he has faced and beaten the best fighters in either division he competed it. Always seemed to take the alternate route and each time he tried to fight the elite, he was soundly beaten. Even managed to lose convincingly to Margarito and Trout. I believe that fighters like Lara and Andrade would have dominated him at 154 (they still would at any of the catchweights he fights at).
lol@losing convincingly to margarita....if cotto fought the way he did in the 2nd fight margarita would have no chance...loaded gloves or not...cotto fought stupidly and too macho in the 2nd half of the first fight....everybody knew exactly what he had to do to win the rematch and he did it exactly as planned..... its funny to hear how people talk about clottey when theyre talking about pac...or even a proposed mw match against ggg.....but when cotto beat him years ago it didn't matter
Indeed, he gets too much credit because he has a very big Puerto Rican fan base. So he's fought here in the US after Tito and that with a few accomplishments being propt up by good match making makes him a HOF.
He's a good fighter, but nothing special and certainly not a first ballot HOF and shouldn't be considered the GOAT from Puerto Rico.
Cotto is indeed a first ballot hall of famer. It's not voted on by fans, but by the boxing industry and his peers. They have already spoken on this. No amount of hindsight resume bashing will change it. You just have to swallow that pill.
but...but...but...c'mon, he had some close fights! You can't be a good fighter and have struggled with other good fighters! That's impossible to reconcile. He should have destroyed Clottey, right? It's not like Clottey is solid fighter, capable with good defense or anything. If Cotto was truly good he wouldn't have struggled with him. Of course the Cotto apologists will point out that this fight happened a year after Cotto was bludgeoned by Margarito... Margarito who was using...well, you know the rest. And Trout! No great fighter has ever, ever, ever in the history of boxing ever lost to someone they shouldn't have. It's unheard of! It's downright offensive. and so on
They're in theory much better than the fans at ****ayzing fighters careers. If they are objective they agree with much of what me and CST80 have said.
