Serious question - was Cotto's linear middleweight reign the worst in boxing history? Its got to be up there

my stance has always been sort of like this....when looking at the mw picture/landscape....remove cotto and canelo from it....and that's what ggg is looking at.....because I knew cotto wasn't fighting him and I still don't know on canelo(unless ggg were to bow to a cw).....so you have a definite no and a slim chance...and ive felt cotto as a definite now since got that belt

so ggg is going to either have to watch canelo hold it hostage or he gets to fight for it against Johnson or heiland......say he gets that fight for the vacant belt? does this really improve his situation? I know a lot of people have said "well that means nobody can duck him anymore"....but im over here like "who exactly is nobody"....I mean...im looking at the mw division, removing cotto and canelo from it, and thinking "well I mean...what did that accomplish"....a fight with lee? ehhh...maybe quillin/Jacobs winner(we know this would be tough to make)?.....there isn't anything appetizing to me there at all.....I know ggg is head and shoulders above that crop......to me dominating the mw division isn't going to prove anything I don't already know about him.....I think he has to do whatever he has to to get canelo in the ring...if it means 155 so be it.....he has to make a move or else its just going to be "blah".....if he can coax froch into the ring? I guess that's something....but i don't feel great about that fight at this point from a matchup standpoint

No doubt  But I'm sure Bradley himself wasn't serious about that, De La Hoya on the other hand seriously seemed up fpr it.

    Ok just read Dan's article.

So, if Cotto wins, GGG becomes elevated to WBC Champion. If Canelo wins, he becomes WBC Champion and mandated to fight GGG.

The fact that the WBC did this is big news because it shows they ARE serious about stripping "money-making" champions if they do not adhere to the rules. This will play major importance in the future due to the GGG mandatory situation. Hopefully this gives boxing fans faith in that the WBC are serious and care about their reputation.

Can it even be called a reign...? It was more like sitting on the title and fighting non-competitive, joke fights.

I'm baffled as to why you posted that link is all.

Well, he would have acheived his goal and unified the division, a little bit by hook and crook but it's still a pretty good achievement. After that I hope he moves up.

Yes, Canelo will have the title if he wins. For you WBC nonbelievers, did they not just prove they'll strip champs if they don't adhere to the rules?

lol Don't hyperventilate. Cotto was only stripped because he refused to pay the 300,000$ sanctioning fees. They really had no choice.

Yup. Mayweather even learned that over the summer when WBO stripped him for not paying. It's sad because it shows the sanctioning bodies are money hungry but i mean... it is what it is.

They've let Mayweather slide, haven't they?

Abuffy, they stripped him cause he didn't pay them sanctioning fees... This isn't exactly an act of kindness.

For now, I'm just happy there's a chance that belt could be freed but let's wait what happens in case Canelo wins before we start singing their praises.

Yes, which shows that they are more concerned about their own self-interest than doing what is right. I would be willing to bet you that if Alvarez wins and chooses not to fight Golovkin in his first title defense, he won't get stripped.

Cotto already paid 800k to GGG to step aside then the WBC wanted another 200-300k in sanctioning fees Cotto felt he was being extorted ..the situation is just set up for Canelo to get handed another belt then to be handed to GGG
