That's a lot of money for a belt that costs around $69.

All Cotto needs to do is grow a set & FIGHT!!! I was ringside at his first two pro fights in Texas & rated him until he showed his true colors.
Cotto got his butt beat LEGITIMATELY by Tony Margarito but he cannot be a man & accept that he joined the ridiculous "loaded gloves" BS He was about to crumble again in the rematch so the NY doc stopped that fight to save Cotto the embarrassment. Its obvious why Cotto says no to a Margarito III Cotto couldn't legitimately beat him Even though he had no sight in one eye from round 2 Cotto is a diva

I may be a big GGG fan, but I don't blame Cotto one bit. Letting the WBC strip him is the right move. One can argue about timing, but ultimately, losing that title is more honest than holding it hostage from real Middleweights.

The system is a bit broken and he's playing it to escape with the most cash himself. Given how many of even the best boxers wind up broke, I can't knock his logic.

Options on the table - probably a <$6m purse against Golovkin right now, or a >$20m purse against Canelo.

There isn't a fighter in history who would choose the Golovkin fight over the money on the table for Canelo. The fact that there's more money in the Canelo fight also tells you that more fans want to see it - basic economics right there.

The issue comes from the WBC forcing Cotto to pay, as I understand it, a combined $1.1m to the WBC and Golovkin instead of facilitating a smooth process to make sure both fights happen for the benefit of all boxing fans (isn't that their non-profit purpose?). He's 100% right to refuse - it's a joke.

Cotto could've just fought his WBC MIDDLEWEIGHT mandatory instead of fighting Geale.

Cotto paid step aside money. Why would he do that if he never intended to fight GG? Do you clowns love going around saying that Cotto and Canelo are ducking GG? We haven't even gotten to the winner of this fight, lmao. But we all wen through the same thing when you said Danny Garcia wouldn't fight Lucas Matthysse. Does Matthysse still have fans? Oh, you probably dropped him like a habit. You'll do the same with GG like you did Kostya like you did Provodnikov.

I still think that Cotto and Canelo will low ball GG if they ever negotiate, but I give fighters the benefit of the doubt where some of you armchairs don't.
