On the other hand why is Cotto talking about things he could buy using 1.1 million if he already paid 800k ? And how can this phrase make any sense: "“I

I had to pay for Golovkin to step aside, I would have paid
    This content is protected
    " ???

Its not exactly the way you're quoting.

Cotto thinks that overall, 800k +300k is too much to pay just to keep a wbc belt. But since 800k came out of his promoter's pockets, he only got upset when He Personally had to pay 300k more.

I don't believe for a single second that Genady didn't get his step aside money. There is NO WAY the fight would have been signed otherwise, not for the wbc belt at least.

It is very simple. 800k is a lot of money, but its ROC money, so Cotto let is slide. 3% of the purse, or 300k, is less money, but its Cotto's personal money, so he tried to haggle and offered 125k. When that did not go through, he said "screw you guys, i am going home".

Basically a battle of posturing egos, where Cotto got the best of it.

The looser WBC and GGG, Cotto is out if Canelo wins he will force GGG to come down to 155 if he wants to make money. WBC won't force Canelo to make 160 defending his belt he will be the new Mexican sacred cow.

Yes, because this is Cotto's first championship fight and he just heard about sanctioning fees a few days before fight night. He knew full well how this all worked going in to it. Dude is getting paid 36 mil, but won't pay the 300k... It's ridiculous that some of you are actually picking up what Cotto is putting down. The guy was my favorite fighter for almost a decade, but this kind of stuff over the last few years has drastically dropped my appreciation of him.

Or you could actually watch the fights and form your own opinions.

But it's cool. Go back to reading your monthly WBC rankings and thinking it accurately reflects the sport. Keep on doing you.

Really, because he fought a crippled shell of Martinez to capture the lineal middleweight belt and that rejuvenated his career big time. For the last year all the major ranking organizations have listed him over Gennady Golovkin because he has that belt. He's been able to use that belt as a bargaining chip to double or triple his purses. And because of that belt, people take him seriously, since before he got it he was a washed up joke whose career as a champion at light welterweight was long behind him. Without that belt, he's Shane Mosley.

Besides, the WBC wasn't asking for 1.1 million dollars for the belt. They charge 1 percent of a fighter's purse for the sanctioning fee. The million dollars is step aside money is for Golovkin, because Cotto wants to hold the belt hostage and never fight his mandatory. They said he can do that, but it will cost him. That's supposed to create a financial incentive for him to fight his mandatory and is perfectly reasonable.
