I was referring to the whole ordeal with dropping belts instead of paying sanctioning fees, fighters being stripped of titles, catch weight title fights, and boxers bypassing mandatories to seek out more lucrative fights. These things happen all the time in boxing, and the only thing that amazes me about this kind of stuff is that people continue to be amazed whenever it happens. I won't pretend to know any of the specifics of whatever deal the WBC, Cotto, Canelo, and K2 had in place, and I especially won't pretend to know the legality of whatever happened. But a fighter giving up a title to avoid fees is nothing new, and legal complications arising when issues of step-aside money surface is fairly common. If there is a legally binding agreement where Cotto promised to pay K2 or GGG or whoever $800k, then I'm sure he won't be able to steer around that forever. But in the meantime, dropping a belt to avoid fees from corrupt sanctioning bodies is clearly nothing new. :smoke
Yeah that's the way sounding, I'm pretty sure Cotto would know his obligations pertaining to what he did or didn't sign. He's acting like he didn't anything like your saying.
If Cotto went back on his word that ain't very cool imo but it is business and they should've assured he would do what they wanted him to. Also, they had Cotto under the impression that GG was a big star, then his ppv came around and flop. It looks like they both may not have been quite so honest with each other. Cotto might've been thinking, "pay this scrub 800k step aside and still be forced to fight him ...hell no, they lied to me about his status"
What Cotto is saying is that he has problem with how the whole system is set up, and agree or not, he believes he is justified in bucking them off because of it. No one likes their arm twisted, you would not be feeling so honorable if you felt your arm was being twisted either.
Once again, if he didn't want his arm twisted, he could have honestly dropped the belt and fought Canelo anyway. He knew exactly what a step aside fee was and what the sanctioning fee was. What he decided to do is to defraud WBC, Golovkin and fans who have been buying the fight as a title fight. The worst by far part of it is defrauding your fellow boxer.
Why does fighting a mandatory constitute arm twisting ? Cotto had 3 honest options: - Fight the mandatory - Pay step aside money and fight Canelo for the title (involves WBC fee) - Drop the belt and fight Canelo without WBC title involved Instead, he chose to deceive everybody into believing that he would pay fees and fight for the title, but at the last moment dropped the belt and refused to pay a fellow boxer (see the thread title).
As much as GGG fans wan you believe everyone is ducking, this situation is more about money from what I've seen in most cases the sanctioning org usually negotiates a lower fee if a step aside is that high. Cotto tried to pay the WBC 150k instead of 300k so they stripped him, logically if Cotto was willing to pay 100+k to keep the belt GGG has nothing to do with it. As far as GGGs money well Cotto is no longer WBC champ therefore, whats the point in paying.
That's easy for you to say, but these guys are used to being in control of their own destiny. They feel like they've earned what they have and don't like being dictated to especially when they have already given so much. Cotto is at the top, paid his dues, and is tired of being dictated to. I bet he was thinking why does a guy who has not earned nearly what I have think he gets to dictate to me how much I will pay him to step aside just because some organization says he gets to fight me. Cotto never had it so easy as Golovkin, so to feel honorable to this guy and that organization, I bet he doesn't care in the slightest, and I can kind of understand why. He never had anything handed to him, so he doesn't understand why anyone else should..
He is not recognize as the champion anymore, so why pay GGG any step aside money. Now is just a good boxing match between two know warriors. The only losers here are the WBC and GGG. They should have taken the $150k amount.
because Cotto promoted this fight as the WBC champ up until the last week and used that status for a bargaining tool to get a better percentage of the ppv he was at best was deceptively stringing along k2 promotions after an agreement as well as golden boy if he didn't want to be responsible he should of dropped the belt and fought Canelo originally instead of wasting everybody's time.
