The methodical, menacing Monzon v the mercurial , mobile Greb. Fifteen rounds who takes the win,is it the Argentinian Artisan,or the Pittsburgh Pogo stick?:think
Grebs one of the worst style matchups for Monzon at middleweight imo Boxers like Loughran, Tunney, M&T Gibbons all had problems with Greb. (of course they also had their success and I could see the argument for Monzon being made from there, but id favor Greb) One of Monzons greatest aspects was his ring generalship, its hard to see Monzon being the ring general he usually was vs Greb, I cant see him controlling him like he did others, and his physical advantages arent going to be as much of a factor as they usually were vs Greb
Monzon was in style, a smaller version of Gunboat Smith, tall and straight up with a hard right hand, but the frenetic Harry Greb decimated Gunboat Smith in short order...Harry IMO would make Monzon look foolish with his unbridled hand speed. With two good eyes, I put NO middleweight ahead of Harry Greb when he was in his prime...You couldn't throw more punches than Greb did to score points. And in about 290 fights in a row Greb was NEVER stopped, so how are you going to beat him..?
Monzon, the greatest middleweight champ, IMO(!!!) would find a way to beat Greb just like he did vs all his title opposition. Probably an ugly 15 round decision, with possibly a late round kd to cap it off.
l, I have not seen Greb fight either, [my dad did though] but even though a person was not witness to a violent tornado, he could judge it's severity by the aftermath the tornado has wrought...Greb whipped so many great and larger HOF fighters in his career such as Gene Tunney, Tommy Loughran, Jack Dillon, jimmy Slattery, Gunboat Smith, Maxie Rosenbloom, Mickey Walker, HTS Bill Brennan, Willie Meehan etc showing the "tornado" that HE WAS by the effects he had on others, places him in the pantheon as the best MW ever...One question to doubters. Why didn't Monzon tall as he was ever "take on" the top LHs of his time at all like the fearless Greb did time and again" ? Answer : Carlos knew his limitations wisely...Harry Greb because of his unique style and cujones HAD NO LIMITATIONS... I rest my case...
Yeah so I was watching Greb fighting yesterday, and thought to myself ... ... WAKE UP YOU'RE LATE FOR WORK!
I have Hagler and monzon at 1 and 2 respectively and they would have been a belting match up. I've obviously never seen Greb so he'll remain a mystery like how many of the murderers row could have won at 160lb vs the incumbent white champions, LaMotta, Graziano and Zale. Cerdan had seen better days at welter and had to make concessions with the 'powers that were!!!!!' to get his shot.
I think the fight depends on Monzon's ability to keep Greb at bay with his jab. Both guys had good stamina, and neither hit hard enough to stop the other. Judging preference could play a role. Judges who tend to score body shots and activity high would favor Greb. Other Judges who prefer cleaner punches landed on the outside would favor Monzon. I'd favor Greb via Split Decision because I think Monzon was not fast and Greb was. The fight I think would be like Leonard vs Hagler, but with more action.
