Shameful case of ducking from Cotto and shameful if he does renege on the agreement to pay Golovkin step aside money. The fact he was stripped of the belt doesn't free him of the obligation, I'd expect a law suit from Golovkin if he doesn't get paid. I have doubts Cotto will ever fight Golovkin while he has anything to lose, this could go down as the most blatant duck since Bowe ducked Lewis.
If it weren't for the players, there would be no game. The game is nothing if not the players. Absolving people of personal guilt because they are part of a larger group of guilty people makes no sense. The game is only shady because individuals choose to play it that way.
His top opponents ducking him and dropping belts in order not to fight him is hurting GGG's bottom line and keeping him from fighting big names and making big money. I'm sure that Golovkin would rather fight Cotto/Canelo, Quillin, and Lee than take step aside money. He would make significantly more, especially as a fully unified titlist. The step aside money is compensation for damages and a recognition that by avoiding him they are hurting his business. The belts are a license to print money. Since Cotto got the belt he's been making six or seven times what he made before. The belts come with an obligation and expectation that they will be defended against the best fighters. That's how they retain their value. By avoiding a mandatory defense of a worthy challenger, the champion is thus devaluing the belts intrinsic worth; so he is undermining the sanctioning body, hurting the earning ability, and legitimacy of all future champions. The step aside money is not arm twisting or corruption. It provides a necessary financial incentive for the champion to do what he is legally obligated to do, what he has already agreed in writing to do, what is best for the sport. If their word and sense of honor is not enough to compel them to honor their contracts, then perhaps by hurting their bottom line and earning power they can be convinced to stop hurting other people's.
You guys waste a lot of time defending a grown man with the free will and ability to find another path to success if he so desires, like most other human beings would do and have done. If that's how you want to spend your free time because you believe you are preserving the "sanctity" of the sport then so be it. Just know, that others see a spoiled overgrown mama's boy man child being catered too so that he doesn't have to deal with real life like the rest us people do.
Very sensible comment. K2 are not idiots if they accepted step aside deal they signed something for sure. I don't see Roc Nation surviving in boxing any better than 50 cent for some reason.
If you work at some company and they make you sign some NDA, if you're fired afterwards it doesn't give you the right to go around and tell everyone what you know right ? It's basically the same thing. Cotto had the belt, did not want to face his mandatory and had to pay Golovkin to step aside and let the Canelo fight happen. The fight is signed, and is happening. Due to Cotto's action he was stripped of the title but GGG still had to step aside to let Cotto fight Canelo in the first place, as he was still champion at the time. It's Golovkin's money plain and simple.
Not only is Golovkin begging for paydays while knocking out tomato cans, but his mentally ret@rded fans are now begging for him. I like the loyalty and progress.
