Johnson doesn't hit hard enough to keep Frazier off and I don't think he's durable enough to survive Frazier's onslaught. Frazier by TKO.
I see Frazier going through Johnson for a short-cut. Johnson's style was clinch and fight in spurts. It made for a dull fight. He would be forced to work in this fight because Frazier is going to be working 3 minutes a round. Jack could try his clinching, but he would still be subjected to that withering body attack. I suppose he could also try to time Joe's bob and weave, but Joe wasn't exactly without whiskers either. Joe was so much more than a one-armed fighter and it really wasn't until years later I appreciated him, because I hated him back in the day. I was an Ali man through and through. But I can see no other outcome on this bout than Johnson getting stopped between the ninth and twelfth round.
Johnson would tie Joe up in knots in close nullifying his body attack. No fighter who relied so much on one single punch is beating Johnson. Too clever, too good defensively.
Johnson on points. I think he picks Joe apart when he's trying to get in range and ties him up well once he's there, especially under the old rule set.
Is hard to believe that boxing had not progressed over the 65 years in which it was at its peak popularity. If you don't want to rely on logic, then look at the video. The game had changed. A more recent example of the advances in the performances in a growing sport is MMA. Champions from 10 years ago would be unable to compete at the top levels today.
I don't see any hwt today with the boxing skills of Johnson. The technical abilities to feint, block, slip, parry and then counter to vital areas of the body is a dead art in the hwt division. Fighters like Wlad are considered good and he has no concept of any of these key skills. Ali as another example was at his best 50 years ago yet no hwt champion since has exhibited his level of ability. The same can be said of Louis, Dempsey and Johnson.
I probably haven't seen enough footage of Johnson then. What I have seen him in, he doesn't look like the world beater people make him out to be. :think Maybe it's a side effect of fighting 25 round fights? Over the shorter stretch I have to take Frazier. Prime Frazier is probably the best man Johnson would have been in with.
The one armed fighter is a myth Frazier stopped quite a few fighters with his straight right. He was a great 2 handed fighter.
You've probably seen the right footage. Very crafty fighter with great reflexes and timing who dominated little guys and opponents who had skills that would be considered laughably rudimentary today. Didn't fight in an era where guys had well-developed jabs or combination punching, so he was able to stalk guys with his hands low and evade their punches pretty easily. I think he'd be up against an entirely different challenge against a modern heavy like Frazier. But you can't trust your eyes or brain with this stuff-- better to just rely on the tall tales and stories spun by early 20th century ringwatchers.
