Does anyone know a rough time plan/schedule for a boxers training camp? Just out of curiosity Whilst I know all trainers have different ways of training and techniques etc. Just thought It would be interesting to see how some of it works behind the scenes. For example how many days/weeks of sparing, weights, running etc? What do they focus on at beginning, middle and end of the camp and througout. Also what rest they have leading up to the fight. For example would they take a whole week off for fight week to relax and recover? Or just hit the pads lightly to stay sharp? Thanks
Shouldn't there be periods of rest or just ticking over in the gym arnie, to avoid over training/burn out?
Yeah, but ticking over is essentially stopping yourself from ballooning in weight and keeping your mind focused. Don't think Arnie is advocating not having periods of rest. Just making sure you use those periods correctly.
They should be in the gym training al the time working on technique but about 8-10 weeks out fro a big fight if a fighter wants to peak then they should tailor their training towards the fight. I know that in MMA where they are more up to date with science the 8 weeks would be broken down into 3 overlapping phases of 2-3 weeks each that would focus on a different energy system. The closer you get to fight night in the last block all the training would just mimick the round/rest period you were going to fight for. So in boxing 3:1 minute training/rest and it would get more and more fight specific as you get to the latter weeks just sparring and pads rather than general conditioning. I reckon you wouldn't be sparring any more than 2-3 times a week but as it gets closer to fight you'd be upping the rounds, maybe even dropping the rest periods to 45 seconds, facing fresh opponents every round etc Last week you would taper off the training, last hard spar/training session maybe 6-7 days before fight night and then just getting easier and easier working on specific techniques and drills until the last couple of days off to fully recover and make weight. Everyone will have their own approach though.
I think people like Lee Selby and Luke Campbell do it the right way. They dont really have training camps. They train year round but 4-6 weeks before they do that little bit extra.
