Lewis vs Vitali. Was there ever a bigger demand for a re-match in the past 20 years?

Boxing (even mma) usually serves up trilogy fights when you have two close combatants who are miles ahead of the competition and had a controversial first fight. Lewis chickened out and short changed boxing as we know.

That depends on when the rematch happens. But you still have not shown me one fight in the past 20 years where the demand was bigger for a re-match. Stick to the title of the thread if possible!

I think the most annoying part was how Vitali fought Johnson to prove the eye was ok and to set himself up as the lead contender for the WBC. Lennox didnt retire til he saw Vitali win that fight

If Johnson won I bet Lewis fights Johnson and sticks around a little longer knowing Wlads out of the picture and he could avoid a Vitali rematch and make some more money

Had Lewis indicated he was close to retiring prior to the Klitschko fight? I'm sure he had a few money fights left.

yes it does, so you cant claim 37. K.S.D.O.A.

Myself on the other hand, has the whole of HW history to support Lewis choosing to retire from lineal title activity approaching 38 being the correct action.

    Wheres your evidence?
Well, it appears that your evidence that vitali wins, is that vitali lost by early stoppage. odd kinda self destructive self contradictory evidence.

Which is why Vitali retired him, even though Vitali was actually fighting through injury and retired in 04 due to this.

I dont hold it against Lewis to retire after I mean he was on the other side of 35 and had a great career already. What I dont like was how he seemed all for the rematch and pushed it off having Vitali fight Johnson to earn only to then go away.

I just dont think Lewis was banking on having to face any tough opponents at the end of his career almost like Floyd taking on a Berto after Pacquiao. After Tyson he probably felt like there was no one left especially after Wlad got demolished and Vitali hadnt shook off the embarrassment vs Byrd. I think he realized he wasnt going to be able to fight on as champ and not have a rematch.

I do hold it against him: the circumstances/manner of tko6 and his promises afterwards, and as you say the wait and see if I can duck Vitali and milk a couple of bums before hanging up. What also annoys me is that the casual fan just sees tko6 and thinks that was some kind of definitive result.

Yes rematch is 100% need it, when you are losing on scorecards and win by lucky punch, or by DQ or by cut.
Lewis open the wound more when was holding Vitali head and was hitting with the other, which is illegal in boxing.
You can beat someone to the death and not open him a cut or could be a lesser cut, and you can open huge cut that can`t be stop by one shot.
    So cuts in boxing happen.
So the theory Lewis was beating Vitali badly is not true.
The score was 4-2. And the last round was close as hell, and jugeds give it to Lewis, cause he was the champion.
Lewis know he can`t handle Vitali on the rematch, thats why he quit boxing.
Vitali Klitschko was unlucky with his defeat, one by injury, and one by very badly cut.

I have to agree with the topic creator 100%: Lewis ducked Vitali.

Anyone who isn't a lewis fan, thinks the same

Lewis tried to make fight post-Klitschko with Roy Jones and Mike Tyson.

He said he would rematch Vitali. In addition he hinted in an interview before the Vitali match that " he could be around a while longer ". Lennox only retired when the WBC ordered the rematch, and he had, but one belt left. He said he did it for his mother if you can believe that.

But you are correct on the Kirk Johnson comment. I was hoping to see a fight in the past 20 years where the demand for the re-match was greater. No luck so far.
